After a long search, Apple has finally found its head of retail. The position first became vacant after the departure of Ron Johnson, who created the Apple Store chain but left in 2011 to become CEO at JCPenney. He was replaced in April 2012 by John Browett, formerly of the retail network Dixon's, but was fired a few months later after controversial interventions in the functioning of Apple Stores. Additionally, another vice president, Jerry McDougal, one of the possible candidates for the vacated top management position, left the retailer in January.

After Ron Johnson had to leave his position at JCPenney after a year, there was speculation that he might return to his old position. However, now Apple has finally filled the long-vacant position, she will take up the position of senior vice president of retail from next spring Angela Ahrendts, executive director of the fashion house Burberry, which was among the hottest candidates for the vacant position at Apple.

I'm honored to be joining Apple next year in this newly created position, and I'm very much looking forward to working with teams around the world to continue to improve the experience and service for customers both online and in brick-and-mortar stores. I've always admired the innovation and impact Apple's products and services have on people's lives, and I hope I can contribute in some way to the company's continued success and leadership in changing the world for the better.

Angela Ahrendts has been the chief executive of UK-based Burberry since 2006 and has seen the company grow a lot during her tenure. According to CNN, in 2012 she was the highest paid CEO in the British Isles with an annual salary of $26,3 million. Prior to Burberry, she served as vice president at Liz Claiborne Inc., another clothing manufacturer. Thanks to Angela, Apple will have a woman in its top management for the first time.

“I am thrilled to have Angela join our team. He shares our values, focus on innovation and puts as much emphasis on the customer experience as we do. Throughout her career, she has proven to be an extraordinary leader, and her accomplishments prove it,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said of Ahrendts in a press release.
