Although the iPod is probably still the most popular player, it is slowly being overtaken by the iPhone and iPad, and the classic music player from Apple is in need. That's why Steve Jobs wants to bring something in the next generation that will attract users to iPods again. I would like the devices to sync with iTunes wirelessly…
Wireless synchronization of iOS devices is still an unsolved shortcoming that most users would like to eliminate. After all, in this day and age, synchronization via a USB cable seems to be somewhat outdated, although Apple of course has its reasons why it has not yet introduced a wireless connection with a computer. The necessary signal stability, reliability or battery life are missing.
However, since iPods have to come up with something new to keep their marketability that will force users to trade in their older device, Cupertino is thinking about how to solve this problem. One solution would be - carbon fiber. Apple also just hired a leading expert in the field of carbon fiber, and has been actively testing WiFi sync for iPods for the past two years.
But as already said, transferring large music and movie libraries wirelessly is quite difficult, and Apple has not yet managed to find the right way. After all, this was also confirmed by a source close to the company, who did not wish to be named. "Jobs is doing everything to get WiFi sync into the next generation of iPods," according to an anonymous source, according to which Jobs sees this feature as a key point for further success.
“They've tried many different designs and materials to make it work, but it's been slow every time. However, the big improvement came with the use of carbon fiber.” claims the source, who also added that Apple has already tested the iPod classic and iPod nano (the penultimate generation) in this way, and with carbon fibers, the synchronization has improved significantly, although it is still not perfect. For now, the USB cable is still faster and more reliable.
It is a question whether Apple will be able to prepare everything for the traditional autumn conference, where the presentation of the new generation of iPods is expected. Here, the iPod classic, which was omitted in the last revision, could finally receive an update. However, Steve Jobs refused, that he would like to cancel it, and so perhaps wireless synchronization will revive it.

It is a fact that when I ride the bus or go somewhere, I listen to music on the iPhone. When I work on the iPad or learn from it, I listen from it. I used to never take my iPod out of my pocket, now I hardly ever use it. I have a shuffle and the only thing I use it for when working in the garden or playing sports is the clip. But the fact is that there is something about it, the iPod lacks the uniqueness that would make me buy it compared to the players in the iPhone or iPad.
I don't own an iPod, but it's a fact that I've been noticing lately and I agree with the author of the article that the iPod is "neglected" = of course it's still the best player and the most popular :D
I'll admit that I'm bothered by the impossibility of wireless iPhone (iPod, iPad) synchronization. I don't know what the problem is, because it has been working on Apple TV for a long time and relatively large volumes of data are synchronized there (there is a 160 GB HDD). Personally, I would welcome it, because I would like to add a few photos to my iPhone and synchronize a few new applications (contacts go via MobileMe), but I don't want to get up and hunt for a wire somewhere. It would be more comfortable for me and it certainly wouldn't take so much energy. Why does the Apple TV and the iPhone not?
That sounds like an interesting idea, I'm kind of slowly planning on all the electronics for apples :)
