Corning has introduced Gorilla Glass 5, the fifth generation of the most famous display cover glass for mobile devices, which is also used by the iPhone. The new generation of glass is supposed to be even more durable and should playfully surpass older products and contemporary competition.

According to the manufacturer, Gorilla Glass 5 survives a fall of the device four times more than the glasses of competing manufacturers. This means that the glass will not crack in 80% of cases when the device is dropped flat on the display from a height of 160 centimeters onto a hard surface. John Bayne, vice president and general manager of Corning said, "Through many waist and shoulder drop tests in realistic conditions, we knew that improving drop resistance was an important and necessary step forward."

Older generations were tested mainly in falls from waist height, i.e. approx. 1 meter. To emphasize this change, Corning came up with the slogan: "We take durability to new heights."

Gorilla Glass has been appearing in iPhones and iPads for a long time, so it is very likely that the fifth generation will also shine in the hands of Apple customers. We will see if Apple manages to use it already with the iPhone 7, because Corning has announced that Gorilla Glass 5 will appear on the first devices towards the end of 2016.
