The App Store received another interesting application from Czech developers. The new weather app Ventusky displays weather forecasts on a map of the whole world and is definitely worth a try. The application interestingly combines a classic weather forecast for a specific location and a map covering the development of the weather in the wider area. This way you can clearly see from which area the precipitation will come or where the wind is blowing from. The uniqueness of the application lies in the amount of displayed data. A forecast of temperature, precipitation, wind, cloud cover, air pressure, snow cover and other meteorological variables at various levels is available for the entire world.

Wind visualization is handled in an interesting way in the Ventusky application. It is displayed using streamlines that clearly depict the continuous development of the weather. The flow on our Earth is constantly in motion, and the streamlines capture this movement in an amazing way. Thanks to this, the interconnectedness of all events in the atmosphere is clear.

Thanks to the VentuSky application, visitors get direct access to data from numerical models. The application collects data from three numerical models. In addition to relatively well-known data from the American GFS model, it also displays data from the Canadian GEM model and the German ICON model, which is exceptional for its high resolution for the whole world. This model also offers an accurate weather forecast for the Czech Republic.

The application took almost a year to develop. The Ventusky.com website has been completely rewritten in native code. Forecast maps with wind visualizations are created in the OpenGL programming language, which is commonly used in the development of game applications. Thanks to the use of this programming language, the visualizations in the application are fast and smooth. The forecast map loads instantly and moving around it is beautifully smooth. This is apparently the first weather application created in OpenGL. The GUI of the application is created in the Swift programming language.
