On his Twitter account yesterday, Tim Cook urged his followers to pay attention to a new app called the Statue of Liberty. As the name suggests, the application is dedicated to one of the most iconic buildings in America, and was created in connection with the opening of a new museum dedicated to the Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty Foundation and Yap Studio participated in the creation of the application, and Apple was one of the financial supporters.

Work on the app took more than a year and involved extensive scanning and photography. The result is not only the possibility to view the statue in augmented reality practically anytime and anywhere, but also a unique view into the interior of the building and how the statue has gradually changed over the years. Thanks to augmented reality, you can project the statue onto a suitable surface and choose whether you want to learn more about its individual parts, view its historical transformations, or see what the building looks like from the inside.

In addition, in the application you can look around the statue from the level of the torch it is holding, and view the surrounding area at different times of the day, or look around the statue from the level of its eyes. Thanks to historical footage, you can see, for example, how the now-defunct Twin Towers looked from the perspective of the Statue of Liberty.

The application also includes informative accompanying texts dealing with the circumstances of the building and its historical background, and you can also listen to an exclusive podcast called Raising the Torch. Visitors to the newly opened museum dedicated to the Statue of Liberty can use a detailed map and voice guide within the application. However, those who cannot make it to the museum will also benefit from the application.

Apple is developing more and more intensive activity in the field of augmented reality and uses the mentioned technology in some of its applications, such as Measure in iOS 12.
