I went on vacation to Italy during the summer holidays. As part of our stay, we also went to see Venice. In addition to walking around the monuments, we also visited a few shops and an interesting incident happened to me in one of them. I definitely needed to translate one text, that is, I didn't know some English words and the sentence didn't make sense to me. I usually have my mobile data turned off when abroad and no free Wi-Fi was available at the time. I also had no dictionary with me. What now'?

Fortunately, I had a Czech application installed on my iPhone Photo translator - English-Czech offline translator. He saved me because, as the name implies, the application works offline, i.e. without the need for an Internet connection. All I had to do was turn on the application and use the camera to focus on the given text, and within a few seconds the Czech translation appeared.

I have to say that I have already tried many different translators and dictionaries, but none of them have worked offline and live translation at the same time. The application is made by Czech developers. The photo translator also contains a very decent stock of English vocabulary, specifically more than 170 thousand phrases and words.

I think that a similar application will not be lost on the phone for any of us. You never know when you'll run out of data and be offline. The application itself is very intuitive and, in addition to translation, also contains a few goodies.

When launched, you will find yourself in an application that is divided into two halves. In the upper one you can see a classic camera and the lower half is used for the Czech translation. Subsequently, it is enough to bring the iPhone closer to the English text, which can be on paper, computer or on the tablet screen. The application itself searches for English words it knows in the text and displays their translation within a few seconds. Do not expect Photo Translator to translate the entire text for you. The application can only work with individual words, at most phrases.

Smart features

You have to put together the translation of the sentence yourself and logically arrange the words in the correct order. If you happen to be in a dark room or some semi-darkness, you can use the sun symbol to turn on the iPhone's built-in flash.

There is also a handy feature in the middle of the application that I personally use very often. The button resembles the play and stop function from the remote control. If you are translating text and want the application to remember the words with the text, just press this button and the image will freeze. You can thus conveniently translate the text using the translated words, and when you want to continue translating, you just need to press this button again and start over.

It can also happen that the camera does not focus properly on the given text and does not recognize the words. For this purpose, there is also the last function, which is hidden under the symbol of several circles. Just press and the camera will automatically focus on the given spot.

From my point of view, Photo Translator is a very simple and functional application that makes sense. On the other hand, don't expect any great miracles, it's still just a handy dictionary that can only translate words, so no "offline google translator". It happened to me several times that the application did not know the given phrase at all and I had to figure it out in another way. On the contrary, she helped me many times, for example when translating foreign texts from a web browser or iPad.

Photo translator - English-Czech offline dictionary is compatible with all iOS devices. Application can be found in the App Store for a pleasant two euros. The application will certainly be used by students in schools or, conversely, by seniors when they are learning the basics of English.
