Already last year, Netflix allowed a number of its users who used the service on iPhones and iPads to bypass the subscription payment through an in-app purchase. It was originally just an experiment, but last week Netflix magazine VentureBeat has officially confirmed that it will make this option available to users worldwide.

A Netflix spokesperson confirmed that the streaming service is ending support for in-app purchases for new users. However, existing users can continue to use it. The exact date of the global launch of the new payment option is not yet known, but it could happen at the end of the month.

Users who reconnect to Netflix on an iOS device after a minimum one-month hiatus will not be able to continue paying through iTunes. The option to pay via Google Play ended last May for owners of Android devices. Users who want to try Netflix again will have to register and pay directly on the website.

With this move, all revenue from new customers will go directly to Netflix. The percentages that Google and Apple charge for app subscriptions have been a point of contention between the companies and app operators for some time. Currently, both platforms charge 15% from each subscription, previously it was even 30%.

Netflix is far from the only one trying to avoid said commissions – it has joined the ranks of giants such as Spotify, the Financial Times, or the companies Epic Games and Valve. Epic Games first said goodbye to the Google Play platform and launched its own online store for PC and Mac. A little later, Discord also launched its own store, promising developers only a ten percent commission on each sale.
