Various variants of game streaming for a subscription are currently quite popular. Netflix does not want to miss the train here, and this number one in the field of streaming video content wants to bring another level of entertainment to its users. According to a new report from Bloomberg, this giant is working on its own gaming platform. But availability on Apple platforms is a question here.

The first rumors appeared already in May, but now it is Bloomberg confirmed. Indeed, according to the report, Netflix is indeed taking another step to expand its business with game content. The company recently hired Mike Verda to lead an as-yet-unnamed "game project." Verdu is a game developer who has worked for major companies such as Zynga and Electronic Arts. In 2019, he then joined the Facebook team as the head of AR/VR content for Oculus headsets.

On iOS with restrictions

At this point, it seems unlikely that Netflix is working on its own console, since the company is primarily built on online services. In terms of games, Netflix could have its own catalog of exclusive games, similar to how Apple Arcade works, or offer current popular console games, which would be similar to what Microsoft xCloud or Google Stadia do.

A form of Microsoft xCloud

But of course there is a catch for Apple device users, especially those who would like to enjoy the new services on iPhones and iPads. It is highly unlikely that this service would be available in the App Store. Apple strictly prohibits apps from acting as an alternative distributor for apps and games. That's also why we don't find Google Stadia, Microsoft xCloud or any other similar platforms in it.

The only way to use third-party game services on iOS is through web apps, but that's not convenient for users, nor is it the best user experience. If the Netflix title then tried to enter the App Store through some "back alley", it would certainly result in another case, which we know in the case of the Epic Games vs. Apple.
