Netflix management's approach to saving content for offline viewing was initially unfriendly and users were not expected to get this option. However, that has now finally changed.

After downloading the update that came out yesterday, many movies and series on Netflix will have a download icon next to the add to personal list and share icons. After tapping on it, the selected item will be downloaded and the user will then find it in a new section of the app called "My Downloads".

You can choose the quality before downloading. In Menu > App Settings > Downloads >Video Quality, there are two levels to choose from, "Standard" and "Higher", with no specific parameters specified.

Deleting viewed content is done in the "My Downloads" section by clicking on "Edit" and then on the cross next to the item that the user wants to delete. All downloaded content can be deleted in Menu > App Settings > Clear All Downloads.

Downloading content for offline viewing is available to all subscribers, but not all Netflix content is currently downloadable. So users can either browse through the movies and series they want to watch and individually check if they can be saved for offline viewing, or they can head to the "Available for Download" section. All Netflix titles should definitely be allowed to download, which includes series like Stranger Things, Narcos, House of Cards, The Crown, Orange is the New Black, and more.

With this step, Netflix joins competition in the form of, for example, Amazon Video and Vudu, which also allow content to be downloaded. Of course, you can also download from iTunes, where a completely different business model is used, where you don't pay for a subscription, but rent/download individual movies.
