What seemed impossible is finally a reality. Apple published on its website press release, in which it informs that it will now allow developers to use their own payment methods for the distribution of digital content in applications. This is a response to a class action lawsuit by US developers, not the outcome of the Epic Games vs. Apple. This lawsuit was already filed in 2019 and is mainly supported by small developers. However, Apple does not introduce news in the App Store just for these small distributors, but across the board for everyone. And the changes are not small.

The most important thing is that the developers can inform the users of their applications by e-mail that they do not have to buy the content only in the installed applications (i.e. those from the App Store), but also from the developer's website. This erases the 30% and other Apple commission for making the purchase. Of course, the company presents this as a benefit. Specifically, it states that the news will bring an even better business opportunity for developers to the App Store while maintaining a safe and trusted marketplace. “From the beginning, the App Store was an economic miracle; it's the safest and most trusted place for users to get apps and an incredible business opportunity for developers to innovate, thrive and grow.” Phil Schiller said.

More flexibility, more resources

Another major innovation is the drastic expansion of the prices at which content is sold. There are currently around 100 different price points, and in the future there will be more than 500. Apple will also set up a fund to help small American developers. Although it all looks sunny, it is certain that Apple does not leave anything to chance and still has some buts prepared that will come to the surface only with the introduction of new products. In addition, it can be expected that there will be more activity around this topic, because soon we should also learn the verdict regarding the aforementioned case with Epic Games. But the question is whether this will be enough for the court. On the other hand, Epic Games is fighting for an alternative distribution channel, but this Apple news only concerns payments, while the content will still be able to be installed only from the App Store.
