An independent laboratory has published the results of high-frequency radiation tests. On the basis of which, the US FCC wants to retest the iPhone 7 and other models due to radiation exceeding the limit.

The accredited laboratory also published other information. High-frequency radiation exceeded the limits of the several-year-old iPhone 7. Smartphones from Samsung and Motorola were also tested.

The tests followed the applicable regulations of the FCC, which also oversees radio frequencies and radiation in the USA. California's RF Exposure Lab regularly tests many of the devices that need FCC approval to operate and sell in the US.

The current SAR limit set by the FCC is 1,6 W per kilogram.

The laboratory tested several iPhone 7s. Unfortunately, they all failed the test and emitted more than the standard allows. The experts then submitted the results to Apple, which supplied them with a modified version of the standard test. Even in such modified conditions, however, the iPhones radiated almost 3,45 W/kg, which is more than twice the norm.

The most recent model tested was the iPhone X, which passed the standard without any problems. Its radiation was around 1,38 W/kg. However, he also had a problem with the modified test, as the radiation rose to 2,19 W/kg.

Conversely, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus models had no problems with the tests. The current iPhone XS, XS Max and XR models were not included in the study. OF competing brands have undergone tests Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9 and two Motorola devices. They all went through without much trouble.

The whole situation is not so hot

Based on the results, the FCC intends to verify the whole situation itself. Office spokesman Neil Grace told the media that they are taking the results seriously and will look into the situation further.

Apple, on the other hand, claims that all models, including the iPhone 7, are certified by the FCC and are eligible for operation and sale in the US. According to our own verification, all devices meet the instructions and limits of the authority.

The whole thing is a bit unnecessarily bloated. The high-frequency radiation emitted by mobile devices is not life-threatening. Accordingly, it has not yet been clearly proven that it is harmful to human health.

The limits of the FCC and other authorities serve mainly as a prevention against excessive emission of particles and thus the heating of the device. This can lead to ignition in extreme cases. But we should not confuse this radiation with gamma or X-rays, which can actually harm the human body. In extreme cases, they also cause cancer.
