Although the Advent season is still not over, the pre-Christmas rush is in full swing despite the coronavirus measures. In this article, we will recommend the best books and movies about Californian society, which you can relax with, or maybe gift them to your loved ones.

Knihy

Steve Jobs | Walter Isaacson

Even uninitiated owners of Apple products probably know very well about the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs. This official biography, which is also translated into our mother tongue, reveals both Jobs' work and his thinking. Jobs himself collaborated on the book, but he did not want to correct the work in any way. I recommend this book if you want to immerse yourself in Jobs' thinking, but unfortunately there are passages here that critics don't think are that important, and they often fail to fully draw the reader into the story.

Becoming Steve Jobs | Brent Schlender, Rick Tetzeli

The official biography of the founder of the California giant in some passages portrays less important data in his life, but this is not the case with the biography by Schlender and Tetzeli. Readers of this title will learn how Jobs went from a man who had to leave his own company to become one of the greatest visionaries of our time. At present, the work is not translated into Czech, but if you speak English, it will probably interest you much more than the official biography mentioned above.

Tim Cook: The genius who took Apple to a new level | Leander Kahney

If you are more interested in the life of Apple's current CEO, Tim Cook, you should certainly not miss the book that describes the time when he took over the helm of Apple from the now deceased Jobs. In addition to this period, the book also includes Cook's greatest achievements to date during the period in which he manages the Californian giant.

Jony Ive: The Genius Behind Apple's Best Products | Leander Kahney

We'll stay with author Kahney for a moment. One of the best designers in the world, Jonny Ive, is a very inspirational figure for many, and the same goes for Kahney's biography, which many also draw from. You can read here about how Ive thought, and above all about his greatest achievements. The book was published in 2013, so if you are interested in a work about the now former Apple designer, I can only recommend the work.

Apple: The Road to Mobile | Patrick Zandl

The last book, which we will try to introduce to passionate readers, is a work by Czech journalist, founder of the servers Mobil.cz, Technet.cz and Internet television Stream, Patrick Zandl. The work is definitely not intended for people who want to learn something about the Apple company from a historical point of view, but it will especially interest those interested in iPhones, iPads and iPods. Here you will learn, for example, why Apple was so successful at the time of the birth of the iPhone, why it created the iPhone before the iPad even though it started working on the iPad earlier, and much more. The book looks at Apple from a more objective point of view, it does not portray Apple as a perfect company, but also as a failure in the field of technology.

Movies

Steve Jobs

From the pages of the book, we move smoothly in front of the TV screens, namely to the movie Steve Jobs. Created in 2015 under the direction of Danny Boyle, the film has won many awards. Jobs himself was portrayed in a fantastic performance by Michael Fassbender, who was nominated for both an Oscar and a Golden Globe for his performance. However, the Golden Globe Award for Supporting Actress went to Kate Winslet, who played Jobs' daughter, Lisa. She was one of the very important characters in the film, as the film shows how Jobs' relationship with his daughter developed. The most striking fact that any viewer will notice is the division into three parts, each of which depicts the time before the introduction of one of Apple's key products. At the ČSFD, the film received a rating of 68%, critics especially do not like the fact that it is an analysis of Jobs's personality rather than his life.

jObs

Probably the best-known film about the birth and functioning of Apple, directed by Joshua Michael Stern, is focused more commercially. As Steve Jobs, Ashton Kutcher appeared here, to whom the film owes its popularity. But it could not be said that in a positive sense of the word - Kutcher unfortunately met with rather negative reviews for his acting performance and was even nominated for the Golden Raspberry award, which is the exact opposite of the Oscar, i.e. the worst acting performance. For God's sake, jObs didn't earn a high rating even at the ČSFD, namely 65%. There can be several reasons, apart from the already mentioned performance of Kutcher, for example the fact that although the film was released in cinemas in 2013, the last mentioned Apple product is the iPod from 2001.

ists

This film tries to be a bit humorous and portray Jobs in a slightly different way, but 51% on ČSFD proves that not every user was definitely impressed by the direction. The film featured, for example, Justin Long, who previously also starred in official Apple commercials. If you want to get to know Steve Jobs in a slightly different way, and you don't mind accurate but bizarrely presented historical facts, the film Steve from 2013 is worth watching.

Pirates of Silicon Valley

Although this picture belongs rather to the older ones, specifically to 1999, it is probably one of the most popular titles among Apple and Microsoft fans. If you're wondering why I'm writing about Microsoft here, it's for a simple reason - the film is about the fight between Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, or rather between the Californian and the Redmont giant. It earned a rating of 75% on the ČSFD mainly thanks to its historical accuracy, which Bill Gates himself confirmed. So if you don't mind brushing up on older titles, this film will definitely make the Advent or Christmas season more enjoyable.
