Augmented reality (AR) is a technology with huge potential that adds a new dimension not only to games, but also to educational applications, which we will cover today. In this article, we tried to introduce you to free or less expensive applications, intended for the widest possible range of users. In one of the next articles, we will definitely look at more professionally focused applications with augmented reality support.

Google Arts & Culture

Although Google Arts & Culture is not a purely AR application, it uses elements of augmented reality for some functions. Thanks to augmented reality, through this application you can view a number of works of art and artifacts in 3D right in your own home, view them in detail and find out relevant information about them. In addition to works of art, you can also view some historical and famous buildings and other places in AR mode. You can also use the Google Arts & Culture application in cooperation with the Google Cardboard headset.

Night Sky

We have already mentioned the Night Sky application on the Jablíčkář website. It is an application that, thanks to augmented reality, turns your iPhone into a pocket planetarium, loaded with content and useful information. In addition to the ability to display the celestial bodies that are currently above your head, Night Sky also offers information about current and upcoming weather, planets, moon phases and much more. The Night Sky app also exists in an Apple Watch version and will look great on your iPad display. The basic version is free, a monthly subscription for the premium version will cost you 89 crowns.

AR Flashcards

The AR Flashcards application is intended especially for the youngest users, who can learn new things in a fun way with the help of augmented reality. The app works with printed cards that display 3D interactive characters and images when you point your iPhone's camera at them. In this way, children can learn letters and the basics of English, in the application you will find animals, dinosaurs, colors, shapes, or even the planets of the solar system and a lot of other interesting content. The application can be downloaded for free, a subscription to the premium version will cost you 109 crowns per month.

Chromville Science

The Chromville Science application, like the AR Flashcards mentioned above, is especially intended for children. To use it, you will need a printer on which you can print individual chapters for coloring. Then all you have to do is point your iPhone's camera at the individual images and you (or your child) can go on a fun 3D trip to explore.

Dino Park AR

The Dino Park AR application is also intended especially for children's users, which will transport them to the world of dinosaurs. Thanks to augmented reality, children can walk through a world full of ancient creatures and plants in the peace and warmth of their home. Dinosaurs literally come to life on the iPhone screen, moving and making sounds. In addition to viewing them, children can also learn useful information through the application.

Civilizations AR

The Civilizations AR application allows you to explore art objects and artifacts from around the planet in the comfort of your own home, thanks to augmented reality. There are currently around three dozen objects to explore in the app, thanks to the BBC's collaboration with museum management around the world. You can change the size and position of the objects after viewing them, and rotate them at will, with some it is also possible to examine their interior with the help of virtual X-ray rays.
