Last fall, we could see a new set of emoticons that will take a look at Apple's platforms. But the company did not manage to implement them either with iOS 15.2 or now with iOS 15.3, that is, with macOS Monterey 12.1 and 12.2. But we should wait for the next decimal updates. We will now be able to use, for example, a pregnant man.

In September, Unicode officially approved and completed the Emoji 14.0 update. This version contains 37 brand new emojis, and including all their variants, it contains a total of 838 new characters. New additions include a flowing face, a face with an eye peeking out between the fingers, hands clasped in a heart symbol, but also a dead battery symbol, a troll figure, an X-ray, a disco ball and many more. But the most controversial one here is certainly the pregnant man, who is present in several colors of his skin.

But the current times are what they are, and since not only Apple is "ultra-correct", it should not be too surprising that this particular emoji will be part of the upcoming set, although there are certainly those who will never send it to anyone, because they will have no reason. While such a symbol may raise a wave of indignation in a group of Puritans, it may in fact arouse virtually no passions. Well, at least here, because it can be different in the world. After all, various cases from history have already shown this.

Political situation

When Apple released a new emoji keyboard in 2015, most users seemed to appreciate the tech giant's efforts to be ethnically inclusive. Different family combinations, flags of different nations, and a variety of skin tones became widely available in an attempt to reflect a more realistic depiction of society. However, not everyone found the new emoticons socially progressive. E.g. shortly after, the Indonesian government took steps to remove same-sex emoticons and stickers from all social media and messaging platforms. However, this was not the first time that emoticons were used as a political weapon.

In Russia, emoticons depicting families with same-sex parents and expressions of same-sex love fall under a controversial law that bans the promotion of non-heterosexual relationships. Senator Mikhail Marchenko stated in 2015: "these emoticons of non-traditional sexual orientation are seen by all users of the social network, when a large part of them are still minors". However, Russia has long faced international criticism for its anti-gay laws. Individuals can be fined up to 5 rubles if found promoting non-heterosexual relationships.

Innocent vegetables

In the emoji-revolutionary year of 2015, Instagram blocked searches for the eggplant emoji due to the rise of users using it to depict various parts of the human anatomy. The #eggplant and #eggplantfriday challenges were created on Instagram, which also became appropriately viral for their theme and flooded the entire platform. Instagram claimed this was a violation of their guidelines, which prohibit nudity and "some digitally created content that shows sexual intercourse, genitalia, and close-ups of completely naked buttocks." However, many were outraged that the equally suggestive banana, peach, and even tacos were no longer addressed by the platform.

The yellow one is too yellow

Apple's default "yellow" emoji also came under public fire after some Chinese users mentioned that the bright yellow skin tone was offensive to Asians. However, Apple stated that this yellow was intended to be ethnically neutral. Of course, these were racial stereotypes experienced in history.

pistol

Unicode has included the gun symbol since 2010, so its transformation into an emoji was the obvious outcome. But New Yorkers Against Gun Violence launched an initiative on Twitter to try to convince Apple CEO Tim Cook to remove the gun emoji, claiming the symbol itself could promote violence. Not only did the group succeed in raising awareness of gun violence (approximately 33 people die each year from gun-related deaths), but the emoji was subsequently actually changed to a squirt gun on Apple's platforms.
