The Facebook chat function is directly built into the very popular Adium chat. Unfortunately, if you activate FB chat directly via the preset preset, it will not work. That is, it will work, but you will not see the list of contacts. That's why I will now describe to you step-by-step the full operation.
- In the Adia menu, press Preferences
- In the tab Accounts press + and choose an account type Jabber
- Fill in the information as follows:
- Jabber ID: username@chat.facebook.com where username= your name, which you can find by clicking on your profile. This is the data after the slash. It is possible that you have not filled in the username. So you have to enter it in your profile.
- Password: your Facebook password
This procedure is guaranteed to work. Tried. It just might happen that Adium won't accept the password. The only solution is to change your password in your Facebook profile.
Maybe you have some ancient version of Adia, but I have a Facebook profile in preferences, so why via jabber?
Because as I write in the introduction. FB chat not working.
Are you already using at least ssl?
Otherwise, facebook chat is jabber :) so that's why it's the same as google talk :)
I'll just add...
jabberID must be entered in the format USERNAME@chat.facebook.com
That's exactly how I originally had it there too, but somehow it disappeared when I published it.
To clarify, chats via the orig facebook protocol in Adio work!!! Only if you do not have a username filled in on FB and if you log in via email, the contacts will be loaded in about 10 minutes if you enter your email instead of using Adia. the name from FB, already mentioned behind the slash, is loaded immediately and without problems. Otherwise enjoy. the name is entered in FB at the top right Account - Account setup.
Yes, I can confirm that :)
Facebook profile in Adio works. I have it like this on both computers. As Jou writes, when a name is entered and not an email, the contacts are loaded faster. When I had an email there, it took about 2 minutes.
Jou, Robin and Gody: It just doesn't work that way for me. I tried several times and still nothing. If I enter via e-mail, it doesn't matter either, I have my Mac on for like 6 hours and during that time my contacts are not loaded even once. If I enter the username there, they load after a while, but then immediately disappear and it keeps flashing like this. It works 100% via Jabber.
If I try that way with Jabber, it still asks me to select the address of the XMPP server (there are many to choose from). Which one is it?
The method of entering only the user name and not the e-mail address does not work for me either. :(
Jane, do you have a username filled in on Facebook?
I have It's already up and running! :)

Thanks for the advice. It helped!
I will add experience, comparison via Jabber or Facebook profile (when entering, fill in your FB user name, not your e-mail):
it immediately updates the online user via jabber (FB was launched in the browser at the same time) but not via the FB profile.
Something for Macs using Adium (ideally 1.4.1) with a Facebook addiction:
Fixed universal libpurple binary with latest revision of pidgin-facebookchat — fixes online contact list not loading

Hmmm, I'm solving this problem right now... FB chat works for me through Jabber, BUT... FB contacts are combined with ICQ contacts... I created a new group for FB, moved everyone there that should be there... I turn off, turn on the Duck and the FB contacts are there , where they were for the first time :-(
I had to delete all my FB friend groups because of this...
