There are dozens, if not hundreds, of macOS shortcuts and tricks to make working with your Mac easier, but many of them are easy to overlook or forget. Although we try to constantly present you with interesting tips, tricks and shortcuts on the pages of our magazines, perhaps it would be good to have as many of them together as possible in one single article at least once.

So today we're going to focus on rounding up the most useful tips, tricks, and shortcuts you can use within the macOS operating system that will save you work and time. You just need to keep in mind that along with updates, Apple can theoretically remove or disable some functions.

Safari

Safari Picture in Picture on YouTube: You can watch a video while doing other things in Safari. In the case of YouTube, just double-click with the right mouse button on the playing video and a menu with the picture-in-picture function will appear.
Picture-in-picture in Safari - more tips: If the right-click method doesn't work, or maybe you're not watching YouTube right now, there's another method. While playing a video, look for the audio icon in the Safari toolbar, right-click on it, and you should see a picture-in-picture option.
Easier to copy links: To copy the current URL in Safari, press Command + L to highlight the URL bar, then press Command + C to copy. It's faster than using a mouse.

Screenshots and screen recording

Screenshots: Pressing the key combination Shift + Command + 3 takes a screenshot, Shift + Command + 4 allows you to select the area of ​​the screen you want to capture, and the lesser-known option Shift + Command + 5 brings up an interface that allows you to set additional details of the screenshot or screen recording.
Limited screenshots: If you select an area of ​​the screen and press the space bar while using Shift + Command + 4, the icon will change to a camera. You can now click on any open window to take a screenshot of just that window or an interface element – ​​such as the Dock or menu bar.

Force Touch Trackpad on MacBook

Quick View: On a Mac with the Force Touch Trackpad, when you click and hold an element, such as a link to a web page or a YouTube video, a small preview of the content appears without leaving the current page you're on.
Dictionary: If you see a word you don't know, highlight it and press the Force Touch Trackpad harder on it to display the dictionary definition.
Renaming folders and files: If you Force Touch the name of a folder or file, you can quickly rename it. When you touch a folder or file icon using Force Touch, a preview of the file will appear.

Keyboards, shortcuts and tools

Alternative mouse controls: Within the macOS operating system, there is an option to control the mouse cursor using the keyboard, which can be enabled in the Accessibility menu. Open the settings System Settings -> Accessibility and in part Pointer control select a tab Alternative pointer actions. Activate the option here Mouse keys.
Quick access to function key settings: If you hold down the Option (Alt) key before pressing any of the function keys for volume, brightness, media playback, and more, you can access the appropriate setting options inside System Settings for those keys. This feature is not available for MacBooks with Touch Bar.

Manage files and folders

Quick folder opening: To open a folder in the Finder or on the desktop, hold down the Command key and press the down arrow. To go back, hold Command and press the Up Arrow key.
Clean up your desktop: For those with macOS Mojave or later, just right-click on the cluttered desktop and select Use sets, to have the Mac automatically organize everything by file type.
To delete a file immediately: If you want to delete a file, bypass the Recycle Bin on your Mac and delete its contents permanently, just select the file and press Option + Command + Delete at the same time.
