When Apple presented the new macOS 2022 Ventura operating system at the WWDC 13 developer conference, it came with a rather interesting novelty. The system also includes the new version of the Metal 3 graphics API, which brings with it the MetalFX function. This takes care of fast and flawless image upscaling, which has a positive impact especially on gaming, where Macs should achieve better results. In connection with Metal 3, there was also a rather interesting revelation - the so-called AAA title Resident Evil Village, which was originally developed for game consoles of today's generation, namely Xbox Series X and Playstation 5, will arrive on Mac later.

After a long wait, we finally got it. Last week, Apple released macOS 13 Ventura to the public, and today the aforementioned Resident Evil Village hit the Mac App Store. On Macs with Apple Silicon chips, the game should fully utilize the performance of the chips themselves in combination with the Metal 3 API options and the MetalFX function, thanks to which in the end it should offer smooth, brisk and undisturbed gameplay. Since the game is finally available, let's focus on what the Apple fans themselves have to say about it.

Resident Evil Village: A success with a slight reproach

Nevertheless, Resident Evil Village has only been available on the Mac App Store for less than a day, so it is already receiving positive reviews from the Apple fans themselves. They praise the game immensely and are satisfied with its performance. But it is necessary to mention one extremely important fact. In this case, they are not evaluating the game as such, but the fact that it runs on newer Macs with Apple Silicon chips. In fact, it is not a completely new game. As we mentioned above, it was originally intended for game consoles of the current generation. Its original unveiling took place already in 2020, and the subsequent release in May 2021.

As we mentioned above, Resident Evil Village is a success on macOS. Apple fans are excited that after years of waiting, they finally got a full-fledged AAA title, which is perfectly optimized for Apple computers and allows them to immerse themselves in the secrets of this survival horror game. But not everyone is so lucky. There is also one minor catch - this game is not available for everyone. You can run it only on Macs with Apple Silicon chips, so the M1 chipset is an acceptable minimum. It is interesting that you simply cannot play even on a Mac Pro (2019), for which you could have easily paid over a million crowns.

On the other hand, the first players did not forgive themselves the necessary reproach, which in this case is more than understandable. Some of them wonder whether it makes sense to introduce a year-old title with such fame, whose gameplay and story have long been known to all fans. In this particular case, however, it is more about something else, namely the fact that we, as Apple fans, saw the arrival of a fully optimized AAA title.

Metal 3: Hope for Gaming

Of course, the main reason why the game runs so well on newer Macs is the already mentioned Metal 3 graphics API. Resident Evil Village also uses the API itself, thanks to which we benefit mainly from the overall optimization for newer Apple computers with Apple Silicon chips when playing. It is therefore not surprising that with the arrival of this title, a rather interesting debate opens up again. Will Metal 3 in combination with Apple Silicon be the salvation for gaming on Macs? We will have to wait for some Friday for a real answer. Apple chips have been available since 2020, but since then we haven't seen many optimized games, on the contrary. Of the better-known titles, only World of Warcraft is available, and now also the aforementioned Resident Evil.

Developers don't rush into gaming for macOS twice, even though Apple has long had the necessary performance and technology. But this does not mean that all days are over. The arrival of the optimized Resident Evil Village, on the other hand, shows that gaming is real and can work even on these devices, which we would not have expected a few years ago. So it's up to the developers. They have to optimize their games for the Apple platform as well. The whole thing will probably require more time and patience, but with the current boom in Macs, it's only a matter of time before better game support comes along.
