Over the weekend, Flickr released some interesting data related to traffic on its photo-sharing web service. This data shows that in 2014, 100 million users used the service, uploading 10 billion photos to the web photo gallery. The most popular cameras have traditionally been devices from Canon, Nikon and Apple. In addition, mobile cameras from Apple have improved year-on-year and jumped just above Nikon to the second place.

If we talk about the five most successful camera manufacturers, Canon won with a 13,4 percent share. The second Apple achieved a share of 9,6 percent thanks to iPhones, followed by Nikon, which took a bite of the imaginary pie with 9,3%. Samsung (5,6%) and Sony (4,2%) also made their way into the top five manufacturers, while the share of Korean Samsung increased by more than half year-on-year.

Among specific camera models on Flickr, iPhones have long reigned supreme. However, classic camera manufacturers such as the aforementioned Canon and Nikon lag behind in the fight for the king of cameras, mainly because they have hundreds of different models in their portfolio and their share is thus much more fragmented. After all, Apple does not offer so many different devices, and the current range of iPhones makes it easier to fight the competition for market share.

In 2014, Apple occupied 7 places in the ranking of the ten most successful cameras. For the second year in a row, the best performer was the iPhone 5, which reached a share of 10,6% among devices. The other two ranks also did not change compared to 2013. The iPhone 4S achieved a share of 7%, followed by the iPhone 4 with a share of 4,3 percent. The iPhone 5c (2%), iPhone 6 (1,0%), iPad (0,8%) and iPad mini (0,6%) also reached the top. It is not clear why the iPhone 5s, which was also a very popular camera during the year, does not appear in the ranking.
