For many years, the French DXOMark has been trying to evaluate the quality of cameras in smartphones (and not only them) in a consistent way. The result is a relatively comprehensive list of the best photomobiles, which of course is still growing with new pieces. The Galaxy S23 Ultra has recently been added, i.e. Samsung's flagship with the greatest ambitions. But she totally failed.
Photo quality evaluation can be measured to a certain extent, but of course it is also a lot about everyone's taste in terms of how they like the algorithms that improve the photo. Some cameras give results more faithful to reality, while others color them a lot just to make them more attractive.
More is not better
Samsung has been fighting with the quality of its cameras for a long time, while naming them as the best on the market. But last year the Galaxy S22 Ultra failed regardless of the chip used, this year it didn't even work with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which, by the way, is the first Samsung phone to include a 200MPx sensor. As you can see, the number of MPx may still look nice on paper, but in the end, such a drastic stacking of pixels cannot compete with a single large pixel.
The Galaxy S23 Ultra thus received the 10th place in the DXOMark test. For the fact that it is supposed to indicate the trend among Android phones for 2023, this is a pretty poor result. After all, this is also because the second position of the ranking is occupied by the Google Pixel 7 Pro, and the fourth by the iPhone 14 Pro. But the worst thing about it is a completely different thing. Both phones were introduced in the autumn of last year, so in their case it is still the top of the manufacturer's portfolio.
Worse, the seventh position belongs to the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max, which were introduced a year and a half ago, and which still have "only" a 12 MPx main wide-angle sensor. And this is a clear blow for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. iPhones are the biggest competition for Samsung's flagship. Just to add, the ranking is led by the Huawei Mate 50 Pro.
Universal vs. the best
In the text, though, the editors do not directly criticize the Galaxy S23 Ultra, because in a certain respect it is a truly universal device that will please every mobile photographer who does not need only the best. But that's where the buried dog is, if you want the best. Sadly, the low-light performance that Samsung has long touted as the best is criticized here.
Even in the field of zoom, the Galaxy S23 Ultra has lost ground, and it offers two telephoto lenses - one 3x and one 10x. The Google Pixel 7 Pro also has a periscopic telephoto lens, but only one and only 5x. Even so, it simply gives better results, after all, also because Samsung has not improved its hardware in any way for many years and only tunes the software.
iPhones have been the best camera phones for a long time, even if they don't usually get the top spot. They can then stay in the ranking itself for several years. The iPhone 12 Pro belongs to the 24th position, which it shares with last year's Galaxy S22 Ultra with an Exynos chip, i.e. the one with which this top Samsung was also available in our country. All this proves is that what Apple does with its cameras, it does simply well and thoughtfully.
For me, DXOMark is not an objective benchmark, because it does both camera benchmarks and at the same time advises manufacturers, who of course pay for it, how to improve their cameras so that they have the best possible results in their ranking. For me, the results can't be trusted that much.
That's right, everyone chooses the tests that suit them. I have an ultra and the photos are great, let the apple guy write what he wants. Other tests clearly confirm this.
Otherwise, the tabloid headline "ripped off". 🙃🙃🙃
They say numbers don't matter, yet you're brandishing a meaningless number here - a ranking in some sort of ranking. What is the real difference in the photos, you don't solve that anymore. Then don't be surprised that everyone here is also ripping you off. 😜
What the S23 Ultra can do is great. When we face off with a colleague who has an iPhone 14 Pro next to him, the Ultra is the clear winner in the photo. Mainly photos against the Sun, zoom and natural colors. It really depends on who is taking the photos with the given mobile phone. Everyone chooses their own. Night photos are natural from the Ultra, lit from the Pro. A lot of surprises await us at Ultra. Now it's a novelty and the following months will definitely push the quality even further.
I have an ip13 pro and a galaxy s22+ at home. Samsung is a class better in everything, including photos.
Twl that's bullshit. Well, jablickarum Samsungs have been lying in my stomach for many years. What a little kid
