The new Apple TV will reach the first customers only at the end of October, however, adepts for the most popular "television" applications are already appearing. A version for the Apple set-top box was announced by the developers of the media player VLC and the streaming application Plex.
VLC is a very popular player across all platforms, as it plays a huge number of formats. The developers of VLC have now revealed that they have already started working on a version for Apple TV, however they are still just getting to know each other with tvOS options.
"It's still very early, but we can already play video," they write developers on the blog, saying that some of the code for their VLCKit will remain the same for tvOS. However, it is not yet clear in what form VLC will run on Apple TV. However, developers will definitely try to ensure that their application plays as many formats as possible on Apple TV.
In iOS, it is possible to use services such as Dropbox, iCloud Drive, iTunes, GDrive and others for sharing, but it is not yet certain what options the tvOS application will offer. But VLC will definitely be among the popular applications on Apple TV as well, because it will make playing "classic" video formats very easy.
Users of the new Apple TV can also look forward to the streaming and multimedia application Plex, which is also familiar from iOS and, like VLC, it will facilitate the playback of various multimedia on an Apple set-top box.
For now, however, developers are reluctant to set dates for when they might have new apps ready. Development for tvOS is just at the beginning and the question is whether a little over a month will be enough for them. But if we don't get it right away when Apple TV goes on sale, Plex and VLC will hopefully arrive not long after.
The problem with VLC is that it does not support e.g. DTS and other audio codecs for which a license must be paid. I was rather pleased that the Infuse 3 application, which is more expensive but plays most audio tracks as it also supports paid codecs, will also be available on aTV. Otherwise, it will be possible to watch a movie from NAS directly on aTV. In addition, it has a nicer environment and it downloads metadata from movies stored in the NAS, so you have a photo plus a description for each movie. So you are not rummaging through address books, but as if in a virtual movie library
what are these sound formats for when you can download the movie in max 5.1 format from the storage anyway? for 99% of the population it is completely useless. and that 1% of audiophile users are happy to pay for the license because they already have other accessories at home for which they have salted away.
That's not entirely true, it's not about quality, but that it can be lost at all. Also
I had to buy Infuse, because the movie and part of the series are different
players will not play and look for another version of the video, or convert it
I really didn't want to. The player is simple, fast (after the last
update), I play via WiFi, or I download locally. Behind the complexities,
everything works.
If you download the .avi version from the storage, it's not a problem. But when you download FHD mkv rips, they often already have DTS, so it is better to pay a few euros for infusion and have room to process and download other rips with Dolby Digital or other codecs.
I would be quite interested in how it will be with other versions of AppleTV. Now that it has moved from the level of a very poor set-top box (I'm talking about the conditions of our country) to the level of a multimedia device, it will definitely not be enough for the HW update frequency it has had so far. Because of the games alone, a new one will be needed every year, at most every two years.
I'm very sorry that it doesn't make much sense here...
I read somewhere that the application can have a maximum of 200MB, so I probably won't play any demanding games there. Even if they were, the question is whether if I buy the game for iPhone/iPad, will it also be for aTV at that price. I'd rather play it via Airplay on the TV.
Will those players also be on ATV 3? Thanks
I wish Kodi would step on it.
Exactly…
