On Tuesday, October 18, Apple presented a trio of new products. Specifically, it was the Apple TV 4K, the iPad Pro with the M2 chip, and the iPad. It was the basic iPad of the 10th generation that was a pleasant surprise with a bitter ending for many fans. After a long wait, we finally got to see a design change, the switch to USB-C and the removal of the home button. Apple thus opted for the same design changes as for the iPad Air 4 (2020). Unfortunately, all that glitters is not gold. The bitter end comes when you look at the price, which has increased unpleasantly.

While the previous generation started at CZK 9, the new iPad (990) will cost you at least CZK 2022. This is a fairly significant price difference. The price has practically increased by a third, which practically moves the basic model into a completely different category. It is therefore not surprising that apple fans are unpleasantly surprised and have no idea what direction Apple actually wants to take with the device. On the other hand, the mentioned previous generation of the 14th generation iPad remained on sale. However, it has been increased in price for a change, similar to most Apple products, which is why it starts at CZK 490.

Is the iPad worth it as an entry-level model?

As we mentioned above, the new generation brings with it one rather fundamental question. Is the iPad worth it as an entry-level model? In that case, the situation is much more complicated. When this basic Apple tablet cost less than 10 thousand, it was the clear choice for a fairly large group of users. It perfectly combined the possibilities of touch phones and computers, which could come in handy especially for the needs of study, work or entertainment. However, this is practically no longer the case. In addition, the iPad itself is not quite complete. Many users still need to purchase an Apple Pencil or keyboard for their work. In such a case, the price can climb up to 25 crowns. The potential buyer thus finds himself in a rather difficult situation, where he has to decide whether to invest this money in an iPad with accessories, or rather not reach for the MacBook Air M1. The latter officially starts at 29 CZK, but of course it is also available a little cheaper.

Another possible alternative could be the iPad Air 4 (2020). It has the same chipset and USB-C connector, but it also brings support for the 2nd generation Apple Pencil. The devices are extremely similar, with the only difference being that you can get the Air model much cheaper, we will see a better quality stylus, and you will also be able to charge it without the need for an adapter.

The future of the iPad

It is therefore a question of which direction the "basic" iPad (2022) will continue to progress. As already mentioned, the new generation brings a lot of questions and decisions that potential buyers will have to deal with. It is necessary to consider all the pros and cons, and above all to realize what you expect from the device. If you want to do more demanding tasks, then it is probably better to go straight for a Mac or another laptop. What do you think of the new 10th generation iPad? Did the news make you happy?
