Last week, the first reports began to emerge. French company Applidium has been porting the VLC media player for the iPad in the utmost secrecy for several months. This effort is supported by the original VideoLAN team.

An unofficial port of the player (VLC4iPhone) has been around for over two years, but is only available through Cydia. However, not everyone needs/wants to jailbreak their phone and therefore prefer the convenience of the App Store. Application VLC media player has been submitted to Apple for approval. After two weeks - on September 20, it finally appeared in the App Store and you can download it for free download to your iPad. Requires iOS 3.2 and up.

Why all the fuss for "some" player? VLC (Video Lan Client) is a very popular open source media player for Mac OS X, but there are also versions for Windows, Linux, BeOS and other platforms. It handles a wide range of audio and video formats, subtitles, can stream media (list here).

The iPad version is very similar to the built-in player. From any location on the drive, you upload movies or clips via iTunes using drag & drop, which are stored on the shelves.

Now you no longer need to convert your videos to MP4, but you can easily use the DivX format on the iPad as well. According to the first responses on the Internet, some users report minor problems when playing HD movies and lesser-known formats. VLC decodes the video in software, with the help of the processor. This is the first version and we should be lenient with the authors. It will probably take some time to iron out the little flies and bugs of the application.

One of the developers from Applidium answered our question about the iPhone version as well. "It's getting close. It won't be in the first version, but it will come :-))."
