Inside the laboratories of the Redmond giant Microsoft, they played a little again and invented a new way to scan 3D objects. Behind everything is a single application that does not need additional hardware to run. Thus, only an iPhone is sufficient to scan a 3D object.

The application, i.e. the entire system, is called MobileFusion, and it provided details about the principles on which it works leaked PDF. According to the creators, the new application can widen the reach of 3D printing, which, despite some progress, still requires expensive equipment and, above all, knowledge. The application will then be presented to the public in October.

3D printing has experienced a big boom in recent years, whether it is the printing of the tiniest things up to giants, such as cars or other things. The printers themselves have fallen slightly in price recently, however, a 3D scanner is also an important part of success, which is no longer such a cheap thing - its price ranges from a few hundred dollars for the least powerful pieces to a few thousand dollars for the best iron .

There are already a few apps among us that would allow us to experiment with the phone in this area, however MobileFusion only uses the computing parts of the phone. In addition, the creators tested the application using the iPhone 5S, which does not have the most powerful hardware available. Even so, the scans are said to be of sufficient quality to be used for 3D printing or for virtual reality that can be used, for example, in games.

The most powerful device is not even needed, because the application primarily needs to take a series of photos, where you take pictures of the given object from all sides, so that a 3D object can be created.

Support is now only tied to iOS products, however, as Microsoft itself says, before releasing the application to the public, it wants it to be available for other platforms as well.
