Microsoft's Internet Explorer can easily be considered the most famous desktop browser. A few years ago, however, it was replaced by the more modern Edge, which until now was a privilege of Windows 10. Now, however, Microsoft is releasing its native browser for macOS as well.

The preparation of Edge for Apple's desktop operating system was announced by the Redmond firm during its developer conference Build in early May. Shortly after that, the browser appeared on Microsoft's website, from where it was soon taken down. It is officially available to the public only now, and anyone interested can download Edge in the Mac version from the website Microsoft Edge Insider.

Edge for macOS should offer mostly the same functionality as on Windows. However, Microsoft adds that it has modified it slightly to be optimized for Apple users and offer them the best possible user experience. The highlighted changes generally mean a slightly revised user interface, where there is a kind of blending of the design language of Microsoft and macOS. Concretely, for example, fonts, earmarks and menus differ.

It should be noted that this is currently a test version. Microsoft therefore invites all users to send feedback, based on which the browser will be modified and improved. In future versions, for example, he wants to add support for the Touch Bar in the form of useful, contextual functions. Trackpad gestures will also be supported.

Even more important, however, is the fact that Edge for macOS is built on the open-source Chromium project, so it shares common ground with Google Chrome and a number of other browsers, including Opera and Vivaldi. A big advantage of the platform together is, among other things, that Edge supports extensions for Chrome.

To try Microsoft Edge for Mac, you must have macOS 10.12 or later installed. After installation and first launch, it is possible to import all bookmarks, passwords and history from Safari or Google Chrome.
