Microsoft today announced, that it will add a feature to the iOS version of Excel that will allow users to use the camera to scan and then paste a spreadsheet into a file. Until now, this function was only available in the Android version of Microsoft Excel.

The function to insert data from an image allows the user to take a picture of a table that is printed somewhere on paper, and convert its contents into digital form into the currently edited table in the Excel workbook. In this way, it is possible to scan and enter a large amount of data, which is written in some tabular form, whether it is financial results, work attendance, class schedule and other similar records.

According to Microsoft, behind this function is a special technology that combines the recognition of letters/characters together with the recognition of table layout and graphic elements. Together with the presence of machine learning elements, the application is then able to "read" the photographed document and correctly insert it into the edited table in digital form.

Currently, the feature is available in twenty-one different languages, both on the iOS and Android platforms. However, only Office 365 subscribers will get access to it. The basic version of Excel (without this feature) is available for free in the App Store.
