Microsoft first introduced its Project xCloud in October last year. It is about connecting the Xbox platform with another platform (be it iOS, Android or smart TV operating systems, etc.), where all calculations and data streaming take place on the one hand, while content display and control are on the other. Now more information and the first samples of how the whole system works have appeared.

Project xCloud is practically the same as a service from nVidia with a label GeForce Now. It is a streaming game platform that uses the computing power of Xboxes in the "cloud" and streams only the image to the target device. According to Microsoft, their solution should enter the open beta test phase sometime in the second half of this year.

Microsoft already offers something similar between the Xbox console and Windows PCs. However, the xCloud project should allow streaming to the vast majority of other devices, whether it is mobile phones and tablets of the Android and iOS platforms, or smart TVs.

The main advantage of this system is that the end user has access to games with "console" graphics without having to physically own a console. The only problem can be (and will be) the input lag given by the operation of the service itself – i.e. streaming video content from the cloud to the end device and sending control commands back.

The biggest attraction of the streaming service from Microsoft is above all the relatively extensive library of Xbox games and PC exclusives, within which it is possible to find several interesting exclusives, such as the Forza series and others. It was Forza Horizon 4 on which the prototype of the service is now being demonstrated (see the video above). The streaming took place on a phone with the Android operating system, to which a classic Xbox controller was connected via Bluetooth.

Microsoft doesn't see this service as a certain replacement for console gaming, but rather as a supplement that allows gamers to play on the go and in general situations where they can't have their console with them. Details, including pricing policy, will emerge in the coming weeks.
