Microsoft presented a whole range of new hardware at its conference in New York today. Somewhat unexpectedly, the Redmond company also revealed its direct competition for AirPods in the form of wireless Surface Earbuds.

The market for completely wireless headphones is on the rise, and Apple still rules it with a clear overview. However, other companies also want to take as big a piece of the imaginary pie as possible and present their wireless headphones in the style of AirPods. It recently premiered Amazon's Echo Buds and now Microsoft's Surface Earbuds are introduced.

The Surface Earbuds impress at first sight with their rather unusual design – the body of the headphones, which houses the battery and other necessary components, is slightly controversial. According to Microsoft, it's a simple design that uses balance between two points in the ear. Surprisingly, however, these are not plug-in headphones, but classic buds, just like AirPods.

Microsoft has also prepared several interesting functions for its headphones. In addition to allowing users to launch things like Spotify with just a tap, the Surface Earbuds also offer integration with the Office suite. Through the headphones, the user will be able, for example, to switch slides during a PowerPoint presentation or have presentation notes translated into more than 60 languages.

Surface Earbuds also offer some kind of ambient noise reduction, although probably not at the same level as other headphones, because Microsoft is trying to achieve it using special filters. The added value is also represented by the two microphones located on each earpiece, thanks to which the calls from the earpieces should be significantly better and the user will also be able to control voice assistants such as Siri or Google Assistant better. Microsoft also highlighted the 24-hour endurance, but the figure also includes the charging case, which serves as a power bank for the headphones.

The Surface Earbuds will be heading to retailers' shelves in time for Christmas shopping. The price will start at $249, which is $50 more than the price of AirPods with a wireless charging case.
