Whether Apple fans like it or not, Microsoft's Office is currently the unassailable leader in the office applications category. The latest version of Office 2016 is also available on the OS X platform, and perhaps for the first time, Mac users can use the same advanced office software as Windows users. One of the last shortcomings of the Mac version was the absence of its Czech localization. But that is changing now.
Although Microsoft Office on Mac also offers a check of Czech spelling, the applications themselves such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook have so far been in English. However, the Czech translation of the user interface and all the options in it is already ready and is part of the test version of Office 2016. More daring users can therefore have Office in Czech already. The others will arrive soon.
By default, the user uses the sharp version of Office. The developer version is different in that it includes the latest possible features, but the software is not yet tweaked enough for Microsoft to officially brag about it. It may contain minor errors or omissions. However, eager users have the option to simply switch between versions.
So, if you want to ensure that you also have Office in Czech, go to the developer version of the software. You can achieve this as follows:
- Start the Microsoft AutoUpdate application, or in any application from the bundle, tap Help > Check for updates.
- Check the option in Microsoft AutoUpdate settings Join the Office Insider program to get early access to new releases. Then select an option from the drop-down menu Office Insider Fast (Quick Updates).
- Confirm the selections by clicking the button Check for Updates, which will start the search for updates, already according to the new settings.
- Select all available updates, download and install them. After completing the entire process, all applications from the Office package should switch to Czech.
"One of the last shortcomings of the version for Mac was the absence of its Czech localization." That's a good joke :-) Unfortunately, Office for Mac is still full of unfinished business and errors, and working with it is sometimes quite annoying. As a long-time Windows user, I considered Office to be one of the best SW, unfortunately on Mac it is one of the worst for me. But I patiently wait for each monthly update and hope that the bugs will be fixed gradually.
Could I just ask about any unfinished business? I don't want to rant, but I personally don't see any and these things are definitely useful for me to possibly warn other people who want to cross.
Thank you
I only use Excel intensively, and my complaints can be divided into two groups.
1. Missing features
a) Connection to external data, considerably limited compared to the Win version = almost unusable (except MS SQL, perhaps).
I need to load external data into a table for analysis. The only usable way is to load them from an HTML table that I have to generate in the web server. In addition, I had to define this connection by editing MS Query files, because it is simply not possible to create such a connection in Excel (only to local HTML files) and use these Query files in Excel with the command Run Saved Query....
b) Trust Center
Every time I open a table with links to external data, Excel displays a warning that data links have been disabled. I always have to unclick, there's no way to turn it off or work around it = annoying.
2. Malfunctioning function
a) When updating the table from external data, it automatically formats the columns for me, unfortunately stupidly, it sets the width of the columns so that the content is not visible, only ###.
Although there is an Adjust column width item in the External Data Range Properties configuration, which can be unchecked, Excel somehow does not reflect this and when this configuration is invoked again, this item is checked again = every time I update the data, I have to adjust the column width to see the data readable = annoying
b) When selecting cells, copying and pasting, the window scrolls and jumps to the sides. This has been improved in recent versions.
c) Enforcing keyboard shortcut convention from Windows. All applications on the Mac primarily use the Cmd+ keyboard shortcut, but Office does not, which strongly enforces the Win convention of Ctrl+. God why? This is simply dilettantism by Microsoft.
d) A separate method of updating applications
Why can't it be done through the AppStore, in the background, without the extra 10 clicks of the mouse?
You could find more of those problematic things, I have only described what I struggle with on a daily basis. In general, Office on Mac still gives me a sloppy impression, it is certainly not a priority for MS, but in those x years, they could learn to write sw for Mac properly and respect the old Mac conventions. If they wanted to…
Great, thanks for the comprehensive answer. I don't use an external connection, it's true that I once tried to figure out how it works, but I gave it about an hour and no success.
The only thing where I would stand up for MS, I don't know about the other keyboard shortcuts, but CMD+ works, I used it on version 2013 and now on 2016, and I'd rather check it by starting Excel, maybe wonder if you don't have it reset somewhere, either in the system or in offices.
Otherwise, I agree and it's quite strange that as far as office for iOS is concerned, there is the option to buy and update via the app store and not on OSX, I don't understand that...
cells can only be inserted or deleted with Ctrl+ / Ctrl+, that's what I meant
On iOS, you can't get those apps the official way - only via the AppStore.
On OS X yes, but as I say, technically it is not a problem for M$, but politically it is. There will probably be more reasons, but at least M$ would lose the possibility of Insider updates, which do not go through the AppStore.
If I'm not mistaken, you can easily distribute the application from the net, but it must have a valid developer certificate, in any case, as far as updates are concerned, then you have to come up with a plan afterwards and it probably won't be so easy to get them to your phone in some "user friendly" way...
They could be distributed to corporate customers within Office365 and application updates on company devices are already handled by the admin, I suspect that it can even be sensibly distributed to the devices thanks to the OSX server thanks to the profiles from the Apple Configurator...
It's more about money... it wouldn't be worth MS in the AppStore.
Ad a) Connection to external data...
If you have ODBC drivers installed, it's OK. You can load from MySQL or FirebirdDB... But you can't edit the saved Query (there used to be an editor for that) - at least I didn't figure out how - on the other hand, I never needed complex queries, so I used the "master" ones and edited them manually.
Ad d) A separate method of updating applications. Why can't it go through the AppStore…
Technically, M$ has it ready, but it is not yet possible due to political reasons on the part of M$
The query can be edited in a text editor.
Is there any free ODBC for MySQL?
It's more than 10 years old for MySQL. If you mean MsSQL, then not yet - even Linux is ahead of OS X in that.
Join the Insider program if you care and want to make a difference.
I diligently report to MS :-)
It hurts that I would have to change the path in Office to the path of the entire Mac OS, which I would not survive... So nothing? Or am I mistaken?
Well, I first had to change the language of the system to Czech, the language also changed in office, and then I changed it back to Slovak, but the office remained in Czech. But if you use a Mac in English, this procedure probably won't help.
I'm considering moving from Word 2011 to Word 2016. Before I do, I'd like to ask users of the 2016 version:
1. Is the bug finally removed when double-clicking on a word also marks the space after the word?
2. Has the bug finally been removed when after about the tenth insertion (paste) of text into the search field, no text can be inserted there again? (Especially for longer documents, it stops working.)
3. Is it possible to automatically check the spelling of multilingual documents? (Not that it is necessary to manually set the language for each part of the text, but so that Word recognizes the language automatically, similar to what TextEdit does.)
I will answer myself what I found out after a short familiarization with the new Office 2016: 1. this bug has not been removed, 2. I did not have enough time to test it., 3. It is not possible. And let me add that the design of the new Office is appalling - horror.
ad 1. This is not a bug, but a feature since version 2009. When marking a word with a space, when moving a word in a sentence, the word is moved so that there are no places without spaces between words or with a double space.
"In addition, the latest version of Office 2016 is also available on the OS X platform, and perhaps for the first time, Mac users can use the same advanced office software as Windows users." MS aligned both platforms, always ahead, both visually and functionally compared to the Windows version...
So I missed it, because the version on Win was already far ahead, while on Mac there was only the 2011 version with reduced functions and a stupid design.
The 2011 Mac version was the best because it didn't have the idiotic GUI like the Widle version, unfortunately this new version already has the nah*** GUI.
Sorry, but you're wrong, because the versions for Widle already had a lot of improvements for the next years, while everything on the Mac froze until version 2016. The GUI is about habit. I think it's on him... the one from Mac 2011
