If iWork doesn't suit you and you're not exactly thrilled with the current version of Office, you might be pleased to know that a new version of Microsoft's office suite for Mac should be released this year. This was revealed by the German manager for Office products during the trade fair CeBit, which takes place in Hanover. After a long wait, users could expect a version that would be on par with its Windows counterpart.

Office has had a rough time on the Mac in recent years. The 2008 version had little in common with the Office we know from Windows, as if the application was developed by a completely different company. Office:mac 2011 brought the two versions a little closer together, bringing, for example, Microsoft's typical ribbons, and the applications finally included Visual Basic for creating macros. However, the applications were slow, in many ways confusing, and compared to Windows, for example, there was a complete lack of Czech language support, or rather Czech localization and grammar check.

Although the 2011 version saw several major updates that included support for Office 365, for example, the office suite has not progressed much since its first release. This is partly due to the merger of the Mac business with the software business in 2010, which Microsoft eventually closed entirely. This was also the reason why we did not get a new version of Office 2013.

Germany's head of Office, Thorsten Hübschen, confirmed that multiple development teams work on all Office applications, with each team developing them for different platforms. It is possible that tablets with iOS and Android operating systems will also appear among the platforms in the future. Hübschen says we should know more next quarter, but Microsoft is already discussing the upcoming Mac office suite with a group of customers, behind closed doors, of course.

“The team is hard at work on the next version of Office for Mac. While I can't share availability details, Office 365 subscribers will automatically get the next version of Office for Mac completely free,” Hübschen wrote in an email to the server MacWorld.
