While most iPhone apps have a sister app on the iPad, some like Weather or Stocks are missing from the pre-installed software. Sure, there's an App Store with over 400 iPad apps, but especially for stocks, it's hard to find one that visually matches Stocks on the iPhone while sharing a simplicity that isn't so much for stockholders as for those who they want to have a more general overview of the movement of shares of companies that interest them.

After a long search, I discovered an interesting application MarketDash, which is the author of the company Yahoo!, which provides data for the Weather and Stocks apps on the iPhone, among other things. Perhaps this is also why the applications are visually similar. MarketDash will offer all the basic information you'd find in a stock - stock price, number of shares in the company, market capitalization and highs for the day and year, stock price movement chart and related articles.

The elements are cleverly arranged on the iPad screen so that all the necessary information fits on one screen. At the top is a list of saved companies along with other data such as value per share, capitalization and price movement during the day; in the lower left part there is a clear table with more detailed data for the selected company from the list, and finally on the right you will find a graph of the share price and below it a list of business articles related to the company. You can read them in the integrated browser.

The chart itself can be enlarged to full screen by clicking on the magnifying glass icon and you can follow the price movement in more detail. While Stocks only offered a two-year chart, MarketDash goes a little further and adds a five-year chart and a "maximum period." This can be different for different companies, for example, for Apple it has been since 1984, for Google since 2004. However, as a rule, this is the period during which the company is present on the stock market.

If you're looking for a copy of the Stocks app for the iPad, MarketDash is probably your best bet, and it's completely free, with only a small banner ad popping up from time to time. The only downside is that MarketDash is only available in the US App Store, so you need a US account, but it can still be set up without a US credit card.
