The iPhone has become my assistant when traveling. I use Navigon navigation as well as Google's internal Maps app to find nearby places. However, Seznam.cz has now released its own application for accessing the Mapy.cz server. Is it better than standard Google app or not?

We start

When you launch the app, you'll see a menu of places that are close to your location, which is handy. If you are somewhere in an unknown part of the country and you want, for example, to quickly find a bus stop, offices, restaurants, etc., just write the first few letters and the whisperer will help you. Of course, you can also switch to the map and you can immediately see where you are - even with selected points on the map.

As with the Mapy.cz model, after clicking on a point, other options are visible, such as planning a route from where you are to a point of interest. For buses, there is a direct click to the page jizdnirady.cz, where you can also search for the necessary connection. I admit that I would have liked more to work with the app Connections, or to enter the stop as the source (currently it is entered as the destination), for searching.

Navigation

Navigation to a point of interest behaves interestingly. They don't always choose the optimal route despite the setting options, or I don't understand how they affect the given search algorithm. It is interesting that there is no time difference between a bike and a car at all, although it is possible to reach the destination more efficiently through side streets. If you turn off first class roads, the navigation is relatively accurate, but I kind of miss the option to enter a route on foot, which I couldn't find.

I also wouldn't mind if the maps behaved "smartly", i.e. they would find the best route for themselves, regardless of the settings, but as a user I could adjust it later on the result screen. For now, it searches according to preset options, which can affect the effectiveness of the route found (see the previous paragraph). Unfortunately, I also had the app crash a few times while searching and planning routes. But I believe that this problem will be removed in future versions.

We've covered the navigation options, but maps can do more. Unlike the standard iPhone maps, they also have their own settings. Here you can set which map base you want to use. I like this setting because in addition to the aerial and historical map, a tourist map can be selected. It is a fact that I would still welcome the possibility of buffering, because there is not a mobile signal everywhere, but you will not find that in the standard iPhone application either. There are third-party apps, but none offered me a tourist map layer.

Transport

The option to view the "traffic layer" is especially useful in Prague, where you can see the busiest places and their traffic level. I also tried smaller cities, such as Jablonec and Liberec, but unfortunately this option is not supported there. Don't worry though, there is one more option that makes me like this app a lot. She has points of interest. You can set what to display, for example restaurants, ATMs and so on. Among the points of interest is one very useful feature for the driver. Transport. Here you will see accidents, road works... I don't know how they do it in the List, but the information is up-to-date, because minor road works that I came across during my travels are also listed here.

Finally

As an Apple fan, I was pleased that the iPhone maps were the first and were given priority over Symbian touch. The developers promise an Android version within six months. In my opinion, the application is very successful. Seznam.cz simply has very well processed map materials. I am bothered by a few small things, for example, the need to connect to the Internet to load map materials. But still, Mapy.cz has unique functions that I will not allow (traffic information). I look forward to more updates. I recommend to all.
