In recent weeks, more and more complaints have appeared on the web that the AirPods Pro wireless headphones have lost a significant part of their ability to filter ambient noise. Some users complained about something similar back in the fall, but another big batch of complaints is popping up now, and it looks like a firmware update is to blame.

Already in the fall, shortly after the start of sales, some users complained that after a firmware update, the ANC function on their AirPods did not work as it did before. The editors of the RTings server, who tested AirPods Pro very thoroughly after release, measured everything and did not find anything unusual. However, when a similar situation appeared again a few weeks ago, another repeated test already confirmed that Apple had indeed touched the ANC setting.

When repeated testing found out that after updating to the firmware marked 2C54, there was indeed a noticeable weakening of the active noise cancellation function. The measurements confirmed a weaker level of interference, especially in the lower frequency spectrum. According to the subjective evaluation of users, it sounds as if the ANC function was reduced from an imaginary value of 10 to a value of 7.

The problem is primarily because updating the firmware and wireless AirPods is completely out of the user's control. He is only informed that a new update is available and subsequently that it is installed. Everything happens automatically, without the possibility of any intervention. So if you've felt in recent weeks that the AirPods Pro can't filter out ambient noise as well as they did a few months ago, there really is something to it.

It is also very interesting that other big players in the field of ANC headphones faced a similar problem, both Bosse, with its QuietComfort 35 model, and Sony. In both cases, users have complained that the ANC "performance" has decreased over time compared to when the headphones were purchased.

Apple has not yet commented on the whole situation. OF measurement however, it is apparent to the RTings server that some change has indeed occurred. It is not known why Apple did this, but it is speculated that the initial ANC setting was too aggressive, which could potentially be uncomfortable for some users.
