It is a clear vision of the future and sooner or later it will happen. Apple has announced that it will start emergency communication in the Globastar satellite network by the end of the month. It is the first step to move to a different way of communication than through the operators' transmitters. But the road will still be long.

Although it's just a small step so far, it's a big thing that doesn't mean much to a European yet. So far, satellite SOS communication will only be launched in the USA and a bit of Canada. But it can be a harbinger of big changes. The iPhone 14 and 14 Pro have the option of satellite communication, which they will be able to use for free for the first two years, after which charges will probably come. Which ones, we don't know, Apple hasn't told us yet. As published by press release, all we know is that he poured $450 million into it, which he will want back.

Now mobile communication takes place through transmitters, i.e. terrestrial transmitters. Where they are not, where they cannot reach, we have no signal. Satellite communication does not need any similar ground construction (so with respect to the transmitters, of course there must be something on the ground because the satellite transmits the information to the ground station) because everything happens in the orbit of the earth. There is only one problem here, and that is of course the signal strength. Satellites move and you have to look for them on the ground. All it takes is a cloud and you're out of luck. We also know this from the GPS of smart watches, which work mainly outside, as soon as you enter a building, the signal is lost and the position is not measured completely correctly.

Change will come slowly

For now, Apple is only launching SOS communication, when you send information if you are in an emergency. But there is not a single reason why in the future it would not be possible to communicate normally via satellites, even by voice. If the coverage is strengthened, if the signal is of sufficient quality, the provider can operate worldwide, without terrestrial transmitters. It's a bright future that Apple is currently jumping into first, at least as the first big name to see something through, although we've already seen various "alliances" here that have yet to come to fruition.

It was already talked about before that Apple has the potential to become a mobile operator and this could be the first step. Probably nothing will change in a year, two or three, but as the technologies themselves race forward, a lot can change. It depends on how much the coverage will grow, the expansion outside the home market and the continent and the set prices. In every respect, there is something to look forward to, even considering the power of iMessage itself, which can clearly strengthen its position in the market of communication platforms dominated by WhatsApp.
