With the arrival of the new macOS Mojave, we encountered many improvements. One of them is a new menu for clearer screenshot capture and, following the example of iOS, quick screenshot editing options. In view of these news, we decided in article about keyboard shortcuts screen shots only very superficially, but the following lines will discuss them in detail.

Traditional screen capture shortcuts

As with previous versions of macOS, traditional keyboard shortcuts can be used for taking screenshots in Mojave. Here is a list of them.

⌘ + shift + 3: screenshot the entire screen and save it as a desktop image

⌘ + shift + 4: screenshot of the part of the screen that you define with the cursor

⌘ + shift + 4 followed by space: screenshot of the window you click to mark

New menu

macOS Mojave brings a new shortcut ⌘+shift+5. It will show the user a new menu that finally makes screenshots clearer and easier. First of all, new Apple computer users will no longer have to struggle with memorizing the shortcuts listed above, but only one will be enough for them. Of course, for those who already use these shortcuts regularly, it does not bring such benefits. So what does the new menu look like?

4.+Screenshot+Improvements+3

After pressing the hotkey, the icons of the three functions listed above will appear, i.e. (from the right) a screenshot of the entire screen, a screenshot of the selected window, and a screenshot of the selected part of the screen. The menu not only displays the mentioned icons, but also adds the option to capture the screen as a video. This can really come in handy from time to time. Until now, screen recording in macOS was not very intuitive, as it required the use of QuickTime Player

New features

Finally, saving screenshots to the desired location or sharing them later has also become an order. In addition to saving to the desktop or documents, it is also possible to immediately share in messages and email. The author of these lines is most happy for the option to save to the clipboard, which allows the file to be inserted anywhere without the need to save it to the computer. A useful novelty is also the setting of a timer for the mentioned functions.

Another improvement is the ability to quickly edit the screenshot, following the example of iOS. In the lower right corner, after removing the screen, a thumbnail will appear, which you can either discard, click on it and edit the image, or simply leave it alone. After clicking on it, a window with the Markup function will appear, where you can mark the image, crop it, add text, etc.

Improved screen capture is an example of what Apple has been trying to do in recent versions of its operating systems - to fine-tune the shortcomings and make the system even more user-friendly and clear. And in this area, macOS really has no competition.
