Every day, in this column, we will bring you a more detailed look at a selected application that has just caught our attention. Here you will find applications for productivity, creativity, utilities, but also games. It won't always be the hottest news, our goal is primarily to highlight apps that we think are worth paying attention to. Today we will introduce you to the f.lux application, which will make working on your Mac more pleasant in the evening and at night.

Hundreds of websites have already described the pitfalls of using a computer in the dark and at night. Mac users have the option to reduce the unpleasant lighting of the monitor either by reducing the brightness normally or by activating the Night Shift function (in macOS Sierra and later). But what if none of the listed options are enough for you? Then third-party applications come into play – namely f.lux.

F.lux is a completely free application that is available not only for macOS, but also for Windows and Linux. In addition to completely adapting the colors on the monitor to your needs, it offers a wide range of timing, customization and control options. If you allow an app to access your time and location data, you can set your Mac's monitor color tuning to automatically adjust to the time of day. F.lux offers a really rich range from very bright, bright colors to very dark, muted ones. The specialties are the preset modes Darkroom (red-black tuned), Movie Mode (muted with an orange accent) and OS X Dark Theme.

Once installed, the app's logo sits unobtrusively in the menu bar at the top of your Mac's monitor - clicking it can access the app's preferences, but also quickly turn f.lux off for one hour, until dawn, for full-screen apps, or for a specific application.

In the app, you can set the time you usually go to bed, and the app will alert you well in advance when it's time to go to bed. In the settings, you can customize the color tuning of your Mac's monitor for a specific time of day, and you can also set the way in which the transition between individual modes will occur.
