When Apple yesterday only through a press release introduced this year's line of MacBook Pros, most believed that the company updated only the bare essentials - primarily the processor. However, there is more than enough news. And while they probably won't convince owners of models from last year or the year before to upgrade, they're still quite tempting. So let's summarize how the new MacBook Pro (2018) differs compared to last year's variant.

While the range of ports, resolution and display sizes, color variants, weight, dimensions or even the trackpad remained unchanged, in other areas this year's MacBook Pro differs from its predecessor. It mainly offers higher performance, a quieter keyboard, more natural display colors, new functions and other improvement options. We have summarized the individual differences clearly in points so that you can easily navigate them.

MacBook Pro (2018) vs MacBook Pro (2017):

  1. Both models boast a third-generation keyboard, which is slightly quieter than the previous one. However, even the new generation uses the so-called butterfly mechanism, so it probably does not solve the problems with the keys getting stuck, because of which Apple had to launch exchange programme.
  2. MacBook Pro (2018) has an Apple T2 chip with support for "Hey Siri". Apple has also integrated several components into the T2 chip that were previously separate, such as the SSD controller, the audio controller, the image signal processor (ISP) or the system management controller (SMC). So far, you could only find the same chip in the iMac Pro.
  3. Both size variants are now equipped with a display and Touch Bar with True Tone technology, which adjusts the display of white depending on the surrounding color temperature, making the display significantly more natural. New iPhones and iPads also offer the same technology.
  4. In the new models we find Bluetooth 5.0, while last year's ones offered Bluetooth 4.2. The Wi-Fi module has not changed.
  5. The 13″ and 15″ models now have an eighth generation Intel Core processor. Apple says that compared to last year's seventh-generation processors, the 15-inch MacBook Pro is up to 70% faster, and the 13-inch is up to 100% faster.
  6. For the model with a 15″ display, it is now possible to choose a six-core Core i9 processor with a clock speed of 2,9 GHz, while the previous generation allowed choosing a maximum four-core Core i7 with a clock speed of 3,1 GHz.
  7. All Touch Bar variants with a 13″ display now offer quad-core processors with a clock speed of up to 2,7 GHz. Last year's models only had dual-core processors clocked up to 3,5 GHz.
  8. The 15″ MacBook Pro can now be equipped with up to 32GB of DDR4 RAM, while last year's models could be configured with a maximum of 16GB of LPDDR3 RAM. Along with this, the battery power in watt hours increased by 10%, but the maximum endurance remained at 10 hours.
  9. All variants of the 15-inch model have an AMD Radeon Pro graphics card, which now offers 4 GB of GDDR5 memory. The model with a 13″ display is fitted graphics processor with 128MB of eDRAM memory, while last year's had half the 64 MB of eDRAM memory.
  10. The maximum possible SSD capacity is doubled – up to 13 TB for the 2″ model, and up to 15 TB for the 4-inch model. Last year's models could be equipped with a maximum of 1TB for the 13-inch, or 2TB SSD for the 15″ model.

The prices of the basic configurations of the new MacBook Pros remained unchanged. In the case of the 13-inch variant with Touch Bar, the price starts at CZK 55. The 990-inch model starts at CZK 15. The highest possible amount can be spent on a 73-inch model, the price of which, thanks to 990GB of RAM and a 15TB SSD, can go up to CZK 32. New models are already available Alza.cz.

It should also be noted that the 13″ MacBook Pro without Touch Bar and Touch ID has not undergone any changes and continues to offer the old generation of processors, keyboard and display without True Tone technology.
