Even uninitiated individuals probably suspect that Apple came out with computers equipped with new M1 processors in November of last year. The Californian giant released the MacBook Air, 13″ MacBook Pro and Mac mini into the world with this processor, and many different articles and views on these computers were published not only in our magazine. After almost two months, when the initial enthusiasm and feelings of disappointment have already subsided for most users, it is quite easy to determine what the main reasons for the purchase are. Today we will break down the main ones.

Performance for years to come

Of course, there are individuals among us who reach for a brand new iPhone or iPad every year, but in the vast majority of cases, these are rather enthusiasts. Ordinary users should have no problem getting by with a newly purchased machine for several years. Apple adds extremely powerful processors to both iPhones and iPads, which can serve you for many years, and it is no different with the new Macs. Even the basic configuration of the MacBook Air, which costs CZK 29, surpasses not only notebooks in a similar price range, but also several times more expensive machines. The same can be said about the Mac mini, which you can get in the cheapest version for CZK 990, but you will have no problem performing even more demanding tasks. According to available tests, it is basic MacBook Air with M1 more powerful than the top configuration of the 16″ MacBook Pro with an Intel processor, see the article below.

Even with more demanding work, you probably won't hear the fans

If you put any of Apple's Intel-powered laptops in front of you, you'll have no problem beating them to the punch - literally. A video call via Google Meet is usually enough for the MacBook Air, but even the 16″ MacBook Pro won't stay cool for long during more demanding work. As for the noise, sometimes you feel as if you could replace a hair dryer with a computer, or that a rocket is launching into space. However, this cannot be said about machines with an M1 chip. MacBook Pro and Mac mini do have a fan, but even when rendering a 4K video, it often doesn't even spin - just like, for example, with iPads. It should be noted that the MacBook Air with M1 does not have a fan at all - it does not need one.

Extremely long battery life of laptops

If you're more of a traveler and don't want to get an iPad for some reason, Mac mini it probably won't be the right nut for you. But whether you reach for a MacBook Air or a 13″ Pro, the durability of these devices is absolutely phenomenal. With more complex tasks, you can get through the whole day without any problems. If you are a student and tend to write notes on your computer and occasionally open Word or Pages, you will be looking for a charger only after a few days. Even the battery life of these devices really shocked Apple.

iOS and iPadOS apps

What are we going to lie to ourselves, even though the Mac App Store has been with us for quite a few years, it cannot be compared to that on iPhones and iPads. Yes, unlike mobile devices, it is possible to install applications from other sources on an Apple computer, but still, you will find far more different applications in the iOS App Store than for Mac. It could be argued about how advanced and usable they are in practice, but I think that almost everyone would like an application ported from a phone or tablet to a desktop as well. So far, this novelty suffers from birth pains in the form of control and the absence of keyboard shortcuts, even so, the positive news is at least that it is possible to run these applications and I would not be afraid to say that the developers will soon work on control and fine-tuning the shortcomings.

Are you a regular user, you have Windows installed on your Mac, but you don't even remember the last time you switched to it? Then I would not be afraid to say that you will be more than satisfied even with the new machines. You will be impressed by their speed, stable system, but also the long endurance of portable laptops. Although you won't be able to run Windows here for the time being, I have a large group of people around me who don't even remember the system from Microsoft anymore. If you really need Windows for your work, don't despair. Work is already underway to bring the Windows operating system to life on Macs with the M1. I dare say that this option will be available in the coming months. So either wait a little longer to buy a new machine with M1, or get a new Mac right away - you might find that you don't even need Windows. Many applications intended for Windows are already available for macOS. The situation has therefore changed rapidly in recent years.
