It's not official yet, but it's coming soon. The opening Keynote for WWDC awaits us, the event at which Apple usually presents the new generation of its most powerful computer. In a certain respect, it will not be any different this year either, but instead of the Mac Pro, the Mac Studio update will come, which says a lot about the future of the professional desktop.

Whatever computers Apple unveils at WWDC, it's clear that they'll be overshadowed by the company's first product for consuming AR/VR content. However, this does not change the fact that many users expect not only a 15" MacBook Air, but are also curious about what the company will show in the segment of the most powerful desktops.

Why not consider a Mac Pro?

Information leaked to the public yesterday about how Apple should introduce not only the 13" MacBook Pro but also the 2nd generation of the Mac Studio desktop computer on Monday. Now these rumors are further clarified. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman mentions, that the upcoming computers should have M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips, which would make sense if they were to be used in Mac Studio. Its current generation offers M1 Max and M2 Ultra chips.

The problem here is that it was previously widely assumed that the Mac Studio would skip the M2 chip generation in favor of the M3 Max and M3 Ultra chips, with the M2 Ultra being the chip the company was planning to put in the Mac Pro. But by using it in the 2nd generation Studio, it clearly drops the Mac Pro out of the game, unless Apple was going to have another M2 chip sitting on top of the Ultra version. However, since there is no information about it, which also applies to the Mac Pro, it is very unlikely that they will be discussed during Monday's Keynote.

The introduction of the Mac Pro at another date is not much expected, so this pattern gives a clear message to all those who have been waiting for this machine. Either they will have to wait another year for the actual introduction, or we will say goodbye to the Mac Pro for good, which might make more sense with Mac Studio in mind. Currently, the Mac Pro is the only representative in the Apple portfolio that can still be purchased with Intel processors. Therefore, it would not be surprising if with the 2nd generation Mac Studio Apple decided to cut the Mac Pro, both with regard to the introduction of the new generation of it and the actual sale of the current one.

There will be a replacement

Should we mourn? Probably not. The customer will still be able to reach for an incredibly powerful solution, but he will lose the possibility of future expansion that the Mac Pro offers. But with the logic of using M-series SoC chips, an "expandable" Mac Pro in Apple's portfolio doesn't really make much sense. While the M2 Max has a 12-core CPU and 30-core GPU with support for up to 96GB of RAM, the M2 Ultra doubles all of these specs. So the new chip will be available with a 24-core CPU, 60-core GPU and up to 192GB of RAM. Even Gurman himself notes that the M2 Ultra chip was originally designed for the Apple Silicon Mac Pro, which it will not get now, and its future is in doubt.
