When Apple introduced the revolutionary iPhone X with Face ID in 2017, it was immediately clear to everyone that the giant would move in this direction. We could then see the facial recognition system in every other iPhone, with the exception of the iPhone SE (2020). Since then, however, speculations and debates about the implementation of Face ID in Macs have been spreading among Apple users. Today, this gadget is also available in iPad Pro, and in theory it can be said that it is appropriate to play with this idea in the case of Apple computers as well. But would Face ID even make sense in that case?

Touch ID vs Face ID battle

As in the field of Apple phones, you can meet two camps of opinion in the case of Macs. Some favor the Touch ID fingerprint reader, which is simply not the case, while others would like to welcome Face ID as a technology for the future. Currently, Apple is betting on Touch ID for some of its apple computers. Specifically, this is the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and 24″ iMac, which has a fingerprint reader built into the wireless keyboard Magic Keyboard. It can be connected to Macs with Apple Silicon chips, i.e. other laptops or Mac mini.

In addition, Touch ID can be used in several cases and we must admit that it is a completely comfortable option. The reader is not only used to unlock the system as such, but it can also be used to authorize Apple Pay payments, i.e. on the web, in the App Store and in individual applications. In that case, just put your finger on the reader after the relevant message appears and you're done. This is a convenience that would have to be cleverly solved with Face ID. Since Face ID scans the face, an extra step would have to be added.

While in the case of Touch ID these two steps are practically the same, where placing your finger on the reader and subsequent authorization appears as one step, with Face ID it is a little more complicated. This is because the computer sees your face practically all the time, and it is therefore understandable that before authorization through a face scan, confirmation itself would have to take place, for example by pressing a button. It is precisely because of this that the mentioned additional step would have to come, which would actually slow down the entire purchase/verification process a little. Therefore, is the implementation of Face ID even worth it?

The arrival of Face ID is around the corner

Even so, there are assumptions among Apple users about the relatively early arrival of Face ID. According to these opinions, the new 14″ and 16″ MacBook Pro, where the arrival of the upper cut-out slightly shocked apple lovers, speaks volumes. In the case of iPhones, this one is used for the TrueDepth camera with Face ID. The question therefore arises whether Apple is not already preparing us in advance for the arrival of such a change.

It should be noted, however, that even leakers and analysts are not entirely on the same page. So the question is whether we will actually ever see this change. But one thing is certain – whether Apple plans to implement Face ID in its Apple computers, it is clear that such a change will not just happen right away. How do you view the given topic? Would you like Face ID for Macs, or is the current Touch ID the way to go?
