Apple currently sells four different models of its earphones known as AirPods. These are their second and third generation, AirPods Pro 2nd generation and AirPods Max. But the company is reportedly working on new AirPods Lite, which should compete with cheap TWS headphones.

With this message so came analyst Jeff Pu from Haitong Intl Tech Research, and we don't think it's a smart move from Apple. However, Jeff Pu claims that according to his sources, Apple expects sales of AirPods as a whole to decline from 73 million units in 2022 to 63 million units in 2023. This is not only due to the fact that Apple will not introduce any new model this year (although in December theoretically, we can wait for the 2nd generation of AirPods Max), but also increasing competition, which is also more affordable for users.

Why AirPods Lite?

If we are only talking about the basic series, AirPods are not cheap headphones, and you can certainly get a comparable solution for a lower price. But then there are those other added features that AirPods will offer you like quick pairing, switching between devices, etc. With the launch of the 3rd generation AirPods in 2021, Apple has kept the 2nd generation of headphones in its lineup. These differ not only in design, but also in options, where they do not provide such advanced technologies as surround sound or resistance to sweat and water.

Of course, the most important thing is the price. If the 2nd generation AirPods Pro cost 7 CZK and the 290rd generation AirPods cost 3 CZK, the 5nd generation AirPods still cost a hefty 490 CZK. But you can get cheap TWS headphones from Chinese manufacturers for around 2 CZK, even those that are very similar in design to AirPods, because they are typically copies of them.

But how much could cheaper AirPods really cost? By cutting it to the core, we could possibly get to 2 CZK, which is still completely out of competition, so in the end it doesn't really make much sense for the company to even deal with something like that. Also, what could it remove from the 990nd generation to lower the price? It seems more reasonable to simply make the 2nd generation cheaper, but that may not happen until the 2th generation of AirPods is introduced next year. Even if Apple switches to USB-C instead of Lightning this year, it probably won't do anything to the price.
