Apple states that its App Store contains just over two million applications. Is it enough or not enough? For some iPhone users, this may not be enough, especially due to system customization, which is why they resort to jailbreaking even today. But does it really make sense?

Apple is working hard to improve the security of its iOS, which also results in jailbreaks taking longer and longer for its creators for given operating systems. However, now, three months after we have iOS 16, the Palera1n team has released a jailbreak tool compatible not only with iOS 15 but also with iOS 16. However, there are fewer and fewer reasons for it, and with regard to future things, they will decrease even more.

A common user does not need a jailbreak

After jailbreaking, unofficial apps (not released in the App Store) can be installed on the iPhone that have access to the file system. Installing unofficial apps is probably the most common reason to jailbreak, but many also do it to modify system files, where they can delete, rename, etc. Jailbreak is a complicated process, but for dedicated users, it can mean getting a little more out of their iPhone , than Apple allows them to.

There was a time when a jailbreak was almost necessary to do any iPhone customization or even run apps in the background. However, with the development of iOS and the addition of many new features that were previously only available to the jailbreaker community, this step is becoming less and less popular and, after all, necessary. Any ordinary user can do without it. One example can be the personalization of the lock screen that Apple brought us in iOS 16.

Only for a limited range of devices

The current jailbreak is based on the checkm8 exploit discovered back in 2019. It is considered unfixable as it was found in the bootrom of Apple chips from A5 to A11 Bionic. Of course, Apple can change other parts of the system to prevent hackers from using this exploit, but there's nothing the company can do to permanently fix it on older devices, which is why it works from iOS 15 to iOS 16.2 for the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and X, and iPads 5th to 7th generation along with iPad Pro 1st and 2nd generation. The list of supported devices is therefore not long.

But when we look at what's in store for software in the coming years, it may be unnecessary to even consider a complicated jailbreak installation. The EU is fighting against Apple's monopoly, and we will most likely soon see alternative application stores, which is what the jailbreak community is calling for the loudest. With the increasing popularity of the Material You design of Android 12 and 13, it can also be expected that Apple, having already brought the possibility of personalizing the lock screen with iOS 16, will also add its own customization of native app icons in the future.
