We recently informed you about the arguments with which Apple defends itself against the European Union's efforts to introduce universally uniform charging connectors for smart mobile devices. The latest news indicates that we will say goodbye to Lightning for good in the future. On Thursday, MEPs voted 582 to 40 for the European Commission's call to introduce a unified charging solution for smartphones. The new measure should have a positive impact primarily on the environment.

According to the European Parliament, there is a significant need in the European Union to introduce measures leading to the reduction of electronic waste, and consumers should be motivated to choose sustainable solutions. While some companies have joined the challenge voluntarily, Apple has fought back, arguing that the unification of charging devices will harm innovation.

In 2016, 12,3 million tonnes of e-waste were produced in Europe, which equates to an average of 16,6 kilograms of waste per inhabitant. According to European legislators, the introduction of uniform charging accessories could significantly reduce these numbers. In its most recent earnings call, Apple said, among other things, that more than 1,5 billion of its devices are currently in active use worldwide, of which an estimated 900 million are iPhones. Apple introduced USB-C connectors for its iPad Pro in 2018, for MacBook Pro in 2016, iPhones, some iPads, or even the remote control for Apple TV still have a Lightning port. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, it could be removed from iPhones in 2021.

The European Commission officially accepted the relevant call today, but it is not yet clear how long it will take before the mandatory and widespread implementation of a unified charging solution for smartphones of all manufacturers comes into force.
