It seems that even the new macOS 10.15 Catalina operating system is not completely without birth pains. A bug has been discovered in the Mail application, due to which you may lose some of your mail.

Michael Tsai came up with the mistake. He develops the EagleFiler and SpamSieve add-ons for the Mail system mail client. When working with a new operating system macOS 10.15 Catalina (build A19A583) ran into a very unpleasant situation.

Users who upgraded directly from the previous version of macOS 10.14 Mojave may encounter inconsistencies upon closer examination of their mail. Some messages will only contain a header, others will be deleted or disappear altogether.

In addition, it very often happens that messages are moved to the wrong mailbox:

Moving messages between mailboxes, for example using drag and drop (drag & drop) or Apple Script, often results in a completely empty message, with only the header left. This message remains on the Mac. If it is moved to the server, other devices will see it as deleted. Once it syncs back to the Mac, the message disappears completely.

Tsai warns all users to be careful, because at first glance you may not notice this error in Mail at all. But as soon as the synchronization starts, the errors are projected and saved on the server and then on all synchronized devices.

A Time Machine backup from Mojave won't help

Restoring from a backup is also problematic, as Catalina cannot restore mail from a backup created in a previous version of Mojave.

Tsai recommends manual recovery using the built-in feature in Apple Mail. Select in the menu bar File -> Import Clipboards and then manually restore the mail as a new mailbox on the Mac.

Michael is not sure if this is an error directly related to the Mail application or if it is a problem communicating with the mail server. Anyway, the current beta version of macOS 10.15.1 apparently does not solve this error.

Tsai advises that users who don't need to not rush to update to macOS 10.15 Catalina.

In the newsroom, we encountered this error when updating the system on the editorial MacBook Pro, which was originally running macOS 10.14.6 Mojave, where we are missing part of the mail. Conversely, a 12" MacBook with a clean installation of macOS Catalina does not have these problems.

If the problem is bothering you too, let us know in the comments.
