Since Apple really only updates the design of its computers from time to time, even experienced users can have a problem with distinguishing generations. This can especially be a problem when buying a second-hand Mac. The vast majority of sellers at our bazaar honestly shares as much information about the device as possible, but other sites may simply list "Macbook" without any additional information. But for some reason, the ad is attractive to you, either because of the visual state of the computer or because the seller lives nearby.

If you are not sure what model it is, you can find out simply in the operating system by opening the Apple menu () in the upper left corner of the screen and selecting About this Mac. Here you can access the serial numbers, information about the year of release and the hardware configuration of the machine. The identifiers that are included in this article are then also listed on the box of the computer or on its bottom.

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air series saw the light of day 12 years ago and rarely saw visual changes. But it was always an ultra-thin device where most of the body was aluminum, including the display frame. Only in recent years has there been a redesign along the lines of the MacBook Pro, from which it (finally) took over the black glass frame around the display and the speaker openings along the edges of the keyboard. The power button with Touch ID is a matter of course. The latest design revision of the MacBook Air is also available in multiple versions, in addition to silver, space gray and rose gold versions are also available. The computers have two USB-C ports on the left side and a 3,5mm audio jack on the right side.

Previous versions released between 2017 and 2010 were characterized by a relatively well-known all-aluminum design. On the sides of the computer we find several ports, including MagSafe, two USB ports, a memory card reader, a 3,5mm jack and Mini DisplayPort, which was replaced by a Thunderbolt port (the same shape) in the 2011 model.

Finally, the last 13-inch model on offer is the model sold in 2008 and 2009. It featured hidden ports under a hinged cover on the right side of the computer. Apple later abandoned that mechanism. The first model from the beginning of 2008 bore the designation MacBookAir 1,1 or MB003xx/A. This supports a maximum of Mac OS X Lion.

Half a year later, the next generation was launched MacBook 2,1 with model designations MB543xx/A and MB940xx/A, in mid-2009 it was replaced by models MC233xx/A and MC234xx/A. The highest supported version of the operating system is OS X El Capitan for both. The power button on both models was located outside the keyboard.

Between 2010 and 2015, there were also smaller 11″ versions of the computer on sale that were largely identical to their larger sibling, at least in terms of design. However, they differed in the absence of a memory card reader, otherwise they retained a pair of USB, Thunderbolt and the MagSafe power connector.
