Podcasts are the spoken word of the new generation. Especially during the pandemic, they gained considerable popularity, even though this content consumption format was created as early as 2004. People were simply looking for new interesting content. Apple responded to this with an improved Podcasts application, and announced the possibility to support popular creators with funds. But then he postponed the possibility and postponed it. Until June 15th.

Yes, Apple has informed all creators signed up to its program via email that starting June 15th everything will start in earnest. Even if they pay you for the opportunity to collect money from their listeners for special content, only now will they be able to start gradually returning the money spent to them. Apple won't be hurt either, because they will take 30% from each subscriber.

It's about money

It is therefore a question of how the creators themselves will approach the situation, whether they will keep the prices they have set, for example, within Patreon and rob themselves of 30%, but they will have a greater reach, or on the contrary, they will add the 30% to the required price. Of course, there will be the possibility to determine the amount of support within several levels, as well as the special content that backers will receive for their money.

The "Apple Podcasts Subscriptions" platform was initially "launched" in May. However, Apple kept delaying the rollout of the news due to "ensuring the best possible experience not only for creators, but also for listeners." The company also promised more improvements to the Apple Podcasts app after a series of issues following the release of iOS 14.5 in April. However, it is not yet known whether the money for paying for the time of "nothing" will somehow be returned to the creators.

The email sent to the creators literally reads: "We're excited to announce that Apple Podcasts subscriptions and channels will launch globally on Tuesday, June 15." It also contains a link where all creators can learn about best practices, how to create bonus material.

Best practices for creating subscription podcasts

  • Make your subscription stand out by clearly communicating the benefits you offer subscribers
  • Make sure you upload enough bonus audio just for subscribers
  • To list ad-free content as a benefit, at least one show should have all episodes delivered without them
  • Alternatively, consider delivering your latest episodes ad-free

“Today, Apple Podcasts is the best place for listeners to discover and enjoy millions of great shows, and we're proud to lead the next chapter of podcasting with Apple Podcasts subscriptions. We're excited to introduce this powerful new platform to creators around the world, and we can't wait to hear what they do with it.” said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, about the new Podcasts feature.

Few people know that the name itself was created from the combination of the words iPod and Broadcasting. The name caught on even though it's misleading because podcasting doesn't require an iPod, nor is it broadcasting in the traditional sense. Czech adopted this English expression essentially unchanged.
