At WWDC22, Apple introduced the new generation of MacBook Air, which is very different from the previous one from 2020. In terms of design, it is based on the 14 and 16" MacBook Pro introduced last fall, and adds an M2 chip to it. But the price has also increased. So if you are deciding between buying one machine or the other, this comparison can help you.

Size and weight

The main thing that distinguishes the devices from each other at first glance is, of course, their design. But has Apple been able to maintain the light and literally airy look of the MacBook Air? According to the dimensions, surprisingly yes. It's true that the original model has a variable thickness that extends from 0,41 to 1,61 cm, but the new one has a constant thickness of 1,13 cm, so it's actually thinner overall.

The weight has also been reduced, so even here it is still an excellent portable device. The 2020 model weighs 1,29 kg, the model just introduced weighs 1,24 kg. The widths of both machines are the same, namely 30,41 cm, the depth of the new product has increased slightly, from 21,24 to 21,5 cm. Of course, the display is also to blame.

Display and camera

MacBook Air 2020 has a 13,3" display with LED backlight and IPS technology. It is a Retina display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels with a brightness of 400 nits, a wide color gamut (P3) and True Tone technology. The new display has grown, as it is a 13,6" Liquid Retina display with a resolution of 2560 x 1664 pixels and a brightness of 500 nits. It also has a wide color range (P3) and True Tone. But it contains a cut-out for the camera in its display.

The one in the original MacBook Air is just a 720p FaceTime HD camera with an advanced signal processor with computational video. This is also provided by the novelty, only the quality of the camera has increased to 1080p.

Computing technology

The M1 chip revolutionized Apple's Macs, and the MacBook Air was one of the first machines to include it. The same now applies to the M2 chip, which, together with the MacBook Pro, is the first to be included in the Air. The M1 in MacBook Air 2020 includes an 8-core CPU with 4 performance and 4 economy cores, a 7-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine and 8GB of RAM. SSD storage is 256GB.

The M2 chip in the MacBook Air 2022 is available in two configurations. The cheaper one offers an 8-core CPU (4 high-performance and 4 economical cores), an 8-core GPU, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. The higher model has an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 8GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. In both cases, a 16-core Neural Engine is present. But the bid is 100 GB/s memory bandwidth and the media engine, which is hardware acceleration of H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW codecs. You can configure the older model with 16GB of RAM, the new models go up to 24GB. All variants can also be ordered with up to a 2TB SSD disk.

Sound, battery and more

The 2020 model features stereo speakers that deliver wide sound and has support for Dolby Atmos playback. There is also a system of three microphones with directional beam forming and a 3,5 mm headphone output. This also applies to the novelty, which has a connector with advanced support for high-impedance headphones. The set of speakers already consists of four, support for surround sound is also present from the built-in speakers, there is also surround sound with dynamic head position sensing for supported AirPods.

In both cases, the wireless interfaces are Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax and Bluetooth 5.0, Touch ID is also present, both machines have two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, the novelty also adds MagSafe for charging. For both models, Apple claims up to 15 hours of wireless web browsing and up to 18 hours of movie playback in the Apple TV app. However, the 2020 model has an integrated lithium-polymer battery with a capacity of 49,9 Wh, the new one has 52,6 Wh.

The included USB-C power adapter is standard 30W, but in the case of a higher configuration of the new product, you will get a new 35W two-port one. The new models also have support for fast charging with a 67W USB-C power adapter.

Price

You can have the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) in space gray, silver or gold. Its price in the Apple Online Store starts at CZK 29. MacBook Air (M990, 2) swaps gold for starry white and adds dark ink. The basic model starts at 2022 CZK, the higher model at 36 CZK. So which model to go for?

The difference of seven thousand between the basic models is certainly not small, on the other hand, the new model really brings a lot. It is a truly new machine that has updated looks and performance, is lighter and has a larger display. Since this is a younger model, it can be assumed that Apple will provide it with longer support.
