Although only in the form of a press release, Apple has already introduced the 10th generation of its basic iPad, which looks more like the iPad Air of the 5th generation. The devices are similar not only in appearance but also in terms of equipment, which is why many would be confused as to what they actually differ from. There really isn't much, although the novelty is more limited after all.

Colors

If you know which colors indicate which model, you will be right at home at first glance. But if you don't know that the colors of the 10th generation iPad are saturated and include a silver variant, you can easily switch models (the following are pink, blue and yellow). The iPad Air 5th generation has lighter colors and lacks silver, instead it has star white (and space gray, pink, purple and blue). But there is one factor that clearly distinguishes the models, and that is the front camera. The iPad 10 has it in the middle of the long side, the iPad Air 5 has it on the one with the power button.

Dimensions and display

The models are very similar and the dimensions differ only minimally. Both have the same large 10,9" Liquid Retina display with LED backlighting and IPS technology. The resolution for both is 2360 x 1640 at 264 pixels per inch with a maximum SDR brightness of 500 nits. Both contain True Tone technology, but the Air has a wide color range (P3), while the basic iPad only has sRGB. For the higher model, Apple also mentions an anti-reflective layer and the fact that it is a fully laminated display.

  • iPad 10 dimensions: 248,6 x 179,5 x 7 mm, Wi-Fi version weight 477 g, Cellular version weight 481 g
  • iPad Air 5 dimensions: 247,6 x 178, 5 x 6,1mm, Wi-Fi version weight 461g, Cellular version weight 462g

Performance and battery

It is clear that the A14 Bionic chip introduced with the iPhone 12 is inferior to the Apple M1. It has a 6-core CPU with 2 performance and 4 economy cores, a 4-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. But the M1 "computer" chip has an 8-core CPU with 4 performance and 4 economy cores, an 8-core GPU, a 16-core Neural Engine and also has a media engine that provides hardware acceleration of H.264 and HEVC codecs. It is interesting that the endurance is the same in both cases. This is up to 10 hours of web browsing on a Wi‑Fi network or watching video, and up to XNUMX hours of web browsing on a mobile data network. Charging takes place through the USB-C connector, as Apple has also gotten rid of Lightning here.

Cameras

In both cases, it is a 12 MPx wide-angle camera with f/1,8 sensitivity and up to 5x digital zoom and SMART HDR 3 for photos. Both can also handle 4K video at 24 fps, 25 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps. The front camera is 12 MPx with f/2,4 sensitivity and centering the shot. As already mentioned, the novelty has it located on the longer side. So these are the same cameras, although it is a clear improvement on the basic iPad, because the 9th generation was equipped with only an 8MPx camera, but the front one also already had 12MPx.

Others and price

The novelty only manages support for the 1st generation Apple Pencil, which is a great pity. Like the Air, it already has Touch ID in the power button. However, it has the upper hand in the area of Bluetooth, which is here in version 5.2, Air has version 5.0. In short, it's everything, that is, except for the different price. The 10th generation iPad starts at 14 CZK, the 490th generation iPad Air at 5 CZK. In both cases, it is only 18GB of storage, but you also have a higher 990GB version and models with a 64G connection.

So who is the 10th generation iPad for? Definitely for those who don't need the performance of the Air and either already own the 1st generation Apple Pencil, or don't plan to use it at all. The 4 extra from the 9th generation is definitely worth the investment due to the fresh design, there are generally more advantages. You will save 4 CZK on the Air, with which you pay practically only for performance and a slightly better display. It clearly looks like the 500th generation iPad may indeed be the ideal choice of mind, considering both its equipment, design and price.
