At the opening keynote of its I/O 2022 developer conference, Google unveiled a lightweight version of the current Pixel line of phones. So Google is pursuing a similar strategy to Apple and Samsung, but like the latter, it is based on the same form factor and does not reach back into history like Apple. But how will this year's Apple novelty fare against Google's novelty?

At first glance, they may be completely different devices, but they have more than enough in common. In both cases, these are lightweight models, in both cases they are new products from the manufacturer, and they even have a very similar price. But if we look at the paper values, the result is quite clear. That is, if performance does not prevail over everything else for you.

Display and dimensions

Google Pixel 6a offers a 6,1" FHD+ OLED display with a resolution of 2 x 340 pixels with a frequency of 1 Hz and 080 ppi. As the first lightweight model from Google, it also has biometric security implemented in the display. The glass used is Corning Gorilla Glass 60, i.e. the same one that the company used last year for the Pixel 439a. Apple iPhone SE 3rd generation has a 5" Retina LCD display with a resolution of 3 x 4,7 pixels and 1334 ppi.

Of course, the size of the display also determines the size of the device itself, although the iPhone SE is not bezel-less, which ultimately makes the device actually larger with respect to its display size. This year's novelty from Apple has dimensions of 138,4 x 67,3 x 7,3 mm and that from Google 152,2 x 71,8 x 8,9 mm. But the weight clearly plays into the iPhone's favor. Its is 144 g, the Pixel's is 178 g.

Performance

Google used its first-generation 6nm octa-core Tensor chip in the Pixel 5a, which it has already tested from the 6 series, and which is on par with its Android competition. In addition, its subsequent generations have considerable potential to flood Apple accordingly. The iPhone SE has a 5nm A15 Bionic, i.e. the current flagship that beats all others. So there is still nothing to talk about here. The Pixel will only be offered in a 128GB version with 6GB of RAM. The 3rd generation iPhone SE is available in 64, 128 and 256GB versions, each with 4GB of RAM.

Cameras

The Pixel 6a has a dual camera, the main one being wide-angle and offering a resolution of 12,2 MPx, f/1,7, and dual pixel PDAF and OIS. The ultra-wide angle is 12MPx sf/2,2 and the angle of view is 114 degrees. iPhone SE has a single 12MPx camera sf/1,8, PDAF and OIS. As for the front camera, it is 8MPx sf/2,0 in the first case, and 7MPx sf/2,2 in the second. Not one of them is among the top photographic machines, but this does not prevent them from taking sufficiently high-quality photos, at least in daytime conditions. After all, the SE model also showed this in our test.

Batteries and more

A smaller device logically has a smaller battery, but a smaller display also places lower demands on it. So the SE has a 2018mAh battery that has fast 20W charging, wireless Qi charging is only 7,5W. The Pixel 6a has a 4410mAh battery with 18W fast charging. The connector is of course USB-C, the iPhone has Lightning. The Pixel has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6e and Bluetooth 5.2, the iPhone has Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6 and Bluetooth 5.0.

Of course, the price also plays a big role. iPhone SE 3rd generation starts at CZK 12 for the 490 GB version. The higher model with 64 GB capacity, which is also available in the Google Pixel 128a, costs CZK 6. Google then set the price of its Pixel 13a at $990, which is just under CZK 6. However, tax must be added to this. It can therefore be assumed that if it were sold here, it would paradoxically have the same price tag as the iPhone SE, with a maximum difference of a few hundred crowns.
