If you follow the events in the apple world, you certainly did not miss the introduction of the new Apple Watch Series 6 and the cheaper Apple Watch SE last week. Each of these watches is intended for a different target group – we consider the Series 6 to be the top Apple Watch, while the SE is intended for less demanding users. Even so, there are people here who simply don't know which Apple Watch to choose from the new pair. A few days ago, you could already read a comparison of the Apple Watch Series 5 and SE in our magazine, today we will look at a comparison of the two latest watches, which will be useful for all individuals who do not know whether it is worth paying extra or not. Let's get straight to the point.

Design and display

If you were to take both the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE in your hands, then at first glance you would hardly recognize any difference. In shape, but also in size, the two Apple Watches compared are absolutely identical. The availability of sizes is then completely the same, where you can choose a 40 mm variant for a smaller hand, and a 44 mm variant is suitable for a larger hand. The shape of the watch as such is completely identical since Series 4, so it can be said that you can't tell the Series 4, 5, 6, or SE from each other at first glance. Less knowledgeable users might think that the Series 6 is at least available in a better version, which unfortunately is not the case in the Czech Republic - both the Series 6 and the SE are only available in the aluminum version. Abroad, a steel and titanium version with LTE is available for the Series 6. The only change comes on the back of the Apple Watch Series 6, where you will find glass with a sapphire admixture – not on the SE.

The first significant difference comes with the display, namely with Always-On technology. This technology, thanks to which the display of the watch is constantly active, we saw for the first time in the Series 5. The new Series 6 of course also offers Always-On, even the brightness of the watch in the idle state is up to 5 times greater than the Series 2,5. It should be noted that the SE does not have a display with Always-On technology. For most users, this is the main reason for the decision, and users in this case are divided into two groups. The first states that Always-On is absolutely great technology and that they wouldn't want an Apple Watch without it, the second group then complains about Always-On's higher battery consumption and prefers a watch without Always-On. Anyway, note that Always-On can always be easily turned off in the settings. The display resolution of the Series 6 and SE is then again completely identical, specifically we are talking about a resolution of 324 x 394 pixels for the smaller 40mm version, if we look at the larger 44mm version, the resolution is 368 x 448 pixels. Some of you may already have made up your mind about Always-On after reading this paragraph - others of course can continue reading.

Apple Watch Series 6:

Hardware specifications

With each new watch called Series, Apple also comes with a new processor that powers the watch. If, for example, you own an old Series 3, then you probably already feel that the performance of the processor is definitely not enough. Whether you decide to buy Series 6 or SE, believe that the processor performance will not limit you for a long time. The Apple Watch Series 6 features the latest S6 processor, which is based on the A13 Bionic processor from the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro (Max). Specifically, the S6 processor offers two performance cores from the A13 Bionic, thanks to which the Series 6 has really high performance and should be more economical at the same time. The Apple Watch SE then offers the year-old S5 processor that appeared in the Series 5. However, a year ago there was speculation that the S5 processor would just be a renamed S4 processor that appeared in the Series 4. Even so, this processor is still quite powerful and can handle practically everything that is needed.

As you surely know, the Apple Watch as such must of course have at least some storage so that you can save photos, music, podcasts, application data, etc. For other products, for example iPhones or MacBooks, you can choose the storage size when you buy it. However, this is not the case with the Apple Watch - both the Series 6 and the SE get 32 GB, which you have to make do with, which from my own experience is definitely not a problem. Even though 32 GB is not a godsend these days, be aware that this memory is in the watch and that there are still users who can get by with 16 GB of built-in storage on iPhones. The size of the battery in both models is then absolutely identical, and the battery life is therefore mainly influenced by the processor, of course if we ignore the style of using the watch.

Sensors and functions

The biggest differences between the Series 6 and SE are in the available sensors and features. Both the Series 6 and SE feature a gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS sensor, and heart rate monitor and compass. The first difference can be observed in the case of the ECG, which is not found in SE. But let's be honest, who among us performs ECG tests on a daily basis - most of us used this feature for the first week and then forgot about it. So the absence of an ECG is definitely not something that should make a decision. Compared to the SE, the Apple Watch Series 6 then offers a brand new heart activity sensor, thanks to which the oxygen saturation of the blood can also be measured. Both models can then inform you about slow/fast heart rate and irregular heart rhythm. There is an option for automatic emergency calls, fall detection, noise monitoring and an always-on altimeter. Both models then offer water resistance up to 50 meters deep, and both models offer a better microphone and speaker compared to their predecessors.

Availability and price

If we look at the price tag of Series 6, you can buy the smaller 40mm variant for 11 CZK, the larger 490mm variant will cost you 44 CZK. In the case of the Apple Watch SE, you can buy the smaller 12mm variant for just 890 CZK, the larger 40mm variant will then cost you 7 CZK. The Series 990 is then available in five colors, namely Space Grey, Silver, Gold, Blue and PRODUCT(RED). Apple Watch SE is available in three classic colors, space gray, silver and gold. If you are able to wish for an Always-On display, EKG and blood oxygen saturation measurement, then the cheaper Apple Watch SE, which is primarily intended for less demanding and "ordinary" users, will serve you perfectly. However, if you are a professional athlete and want to have a complete overview of your health at all times, the Apple Watch Series 44 is exactly for you, offering top-of-the-line technology and what other Apple Watches do not yet.
