Apple is mostly successful because of its phones, tablets, computers and wearable electronics products. Among other things, its offer includes the Apple TV multimedia center, which, however, is somewhat neglected by many consumers. It is indeed a great device that you can connect to almost any modern projector and TV using the HDMI port, and from iPhone, iPad and Mac, you can project presentations, movies, or enjoy game titles downloaded directly to the device. Here, however, the universality and at the same time the closedness of Apple tripped its feet a little - for projection, you can buy a significantly cheaper Chromecast, and then players buy game consoles specifically designed for it. In addition, Apple has been sleeping for a while, and for a long time you could buy the latest model Apple TV from 2017. But that changed last Tuesday, and the Californian giant is coming with a brand new product. How big is the intergenerational leap, and is it worth buying a new device?

Performance and storage capacity

Since the design of the new Apple TV hasn't changed, and as a result, it's not that important a buying factor for this product, let's go straight to the storage capacity and performance. Both the 2017 device and the Apple TV from this year can be purchased in 32 GB and 64 GB variants. Personally, I am of the opinion that you don't even need a lot of data directly in the Apple TV memory - the applications are smaller and you stream most of the content over the Internet, but more demanding users would perhaps welcome the 128 GB version. The Apple A12 Bionic chip, exactly the same as the processor offered in the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max, was placed in the new Apple TV. Although the processor is more than two years old, it can handle even the most demanding games available for the tvOS system.

However, to be honest, you won't really notice the performance increase here. The older Apple TV has the A10X Fusion chip, which was first used in the iPad Pro (2017). It is a processor based on the one from the iPhone 7, but it is significantly improved and its performance is comparable to the A12 Bionic. Sure, thanks to the more modern A12 chip architecture, you're guaranteed longer software support, but now tell me how big a step tvOS has made in recent years? I don't think it has undergone such a drastic shift that it is necessary to look for regular updates.

Function

Both machines are proud of the ability to play 4K video on supported televisions or monitors, in this case the image will literally draw you into the story. If you have a high-quality speaker system, you will be able to use the benefits of Dolby Atmos surround sound with both products, but this year's Apple TV, in addition to the aforementioned, can also play video recorded in Dolby Vision HDR. All the news in the field of image caused the deployment of an improved HDMI 2.1 port. Furthermore, nothing has changed regarding connectivity, you can secure the connection using an Ethernet cable, you can also use WiFi. Probably the most interesting gadget that Apple rushed with is color calibration using the iPhone. As the Californian giant rightly claims, colors look a little different on every TV. In order for the Apple TV to adjust the image to the ideal form, you point your iPhone's camera at the TV screen. The recording is sent to the Apple TV and it calibrates the colors accordingly.

Siri Remote

Together with the new product, the Apple Siri Remote also saw the light of day. It is made of recyclable aluminum, has an improved touch surface with gesture support, and you will now find a Siri button on the side of the controller. The great news is that the controller is compatible with both the latest and older Apple TVs, so you don't necessarily need to buy a new product if you want to take advantage of it.

Which Apple TV to buy?

To tell the truth, the redesigned Apple TV is not at all as redesigned as Apple presented it. Yes, it will offer a more powerful processor and a somewhat more faithful presentation of image and sound, but tvOS cannot properly use the performance and in other parameters even the older machine is not too far behind. If you already have an older Apple TV at home, upgrading to a new model doesn't make much sense. If you use an Apple TV HD or one of the previous models, you could consider getting the latest model, but in my opinion, even the 2017 product will serve you more than perfectly. Yes, if you are an avid gamer and enjoy Apple Arcade titles, this year's model will please you. The rest of you who project family photos and occasionally watch a movie, in my opinion, you'd be better off waiting for the discount on the older model and saving up.
